    Water Temperature in Cozumel

I did a night dive on March 11 and two morning dives on each of March 12 and March 13 and the water temperature was a constant 79° F. The norte did bring with it cool air topside.

    Peer Pressure in Chuuk

The San Francisco Maru is dived every week off the Truk Odyssey, after five days of diving the other wrecks in the lagoon. Most divers make this dive using a single steel 108 tank with EAN23. Off the top of my head, on my dive last year, I spent about 16 minutes at bottom (my max depth was 171...

One day to dive in Bali: where should I go?

I went ahead and dove the USAT Liberty wreck and was glad that I did. While just about any wreck dive will pale in comparison to the diving I did at Truk last year, this was certainly a worthwhile dive. And, at $80 for the two-tank dive, round trip transportation with pick up and drop off at...

One day to dive in Bali: where should I go?

I will be in Bali next week. Unfortunately, my trip is short and I can only allocate one day to diving. Because of that, I don't plan on dragging any scuba except a computer and mask halfway around the world with me, so I will need to find an operator with satisfactory rental gear. I'll be...

Is Truk Lagoon only for advanced?

All the divers who were nitrox certified (which was all of them on our trip) dove EAN 27-28 on every dive except for the San Francisco Maru, where we dove EAN 23.

    Chuuk

The above-listed dives are all extraordinary. Working your way from the torpedo hole of the Shinkoku Maru through its engine room, exploring the holds and the airplanes and parts inside those holds of the Fujikawa Maru, seeing the battle tanks on the deck of and descending into the loaded holds...

    SAT-CZM: $86 base fare, $196 all-in on DL/NW

DL and NW have filed an $86 round-trip base fare in the San Antonio to Cozumel market. $196.76 all-in for the itinerary I chose. Since the fare is exactly half of AA, CO, and US's fare, perhaps it was intended to be a one-way and was misfiled as a round-trip. Whatever the case, I don't think...

Is Truk Lagoon only for advanced?

A constant 82-84F in May. I wore swim trunks and a rash guard and was warm enough. A thin wetsuit would be a good idea for exposure protection. Without one, I wound up with a few scrapes. A current tetanus shot would be a good idea no matter what. The penetrations are fairly straightforward...

Is Truk Lagoon only for advanced?

I spent a week on the Truk Odyssey in May. The maximum depth of my shallowest dive was 68 feet; my deepest was 171 feet. Most dives were in the 90-120 foot range at their deepest. I was in deco on eight of my 21 dives (although my Suunto is very conservative). In fact, here is the basic data...

"Coz on a budget" Trip Report - Feb. 2009

What was the water temperature like during your trip? I'm headed down to Cozumel next weekend and am trying to decide what exposure protection I will need.

    Palau, Chuuk, and where else?

Singapore would be considerably far out of your way, and I think it would require at least a double connection. The logical stopover points are Guam, Honolulu, or Tokyo. Of those three, I would visit Tokyo, no question. In fact, I am doing exactly that -- my third visit to Tokyo -- on my way...

    Deploying a SMB

So how do I thread the line and secure the knot? I've seen some Youtube footage, but it was only nominally helpful. Any good written instructions or pictures?

    Deploying a SMB

Can somebody explain to me why you need to tie a knot and thread the line connecting the spool to the DSMB as opposed to just clipping the double-ender that is attached to the line onto the DSMB? Also, how do you go about tying this knot and threading the line properly?

    Chris Sawyer Dive

A buddy and I dove with Chris Sawyer on their regular Friday trip to the RMS Rhone over Memorial Day weekend. The Rhone itself was an interesting dive, especially the fairly intact bow section of the ship, which was our first dive. It's not often that you get to dive a shipwreck from the...

Great news for Central Texas Divers

Some hopefully helpful info for prospective travelers . . . New Mexican low cost carrier start-up VivaAerobus is offering $9 base fares each way on its nonstop flights between AUS (Austin) and Cancun (CUN) with a five-week advance purchase and, of course, subject to availability. The...

    Maldives Information Please

The Vilamendhoo Island Resort has great shore diving, daily boat diving, and is a great value for the Maldives. I posted a trip report here.

Fiji Trip Report - Taveuni, November 2007

What a timely report. I'll be staying at Maravu and diving with Jewel Bubble Divers in two-and-a-half weeks. Which carrier did you take for the interisland flights from and to Nadi: Air Pacific or Air Fiji? How strict were they with the weight of your luggage (including your scuba gear)...

    Retractor receommendation for Ikelite PCm?

It was the key ring that rusted. The stainless steel snap bolt was fine. Using cave line instead seems to be a good solution to that problem. Since I use my Ikelite PCm as a primary light during daytime dives, I have a concern about losing the light once it is unclipped if I don't use a...

    Retractor receommendation for Ikelite PCm?

I do most of my diving with an Ikelite PCm backup dive light. Previously I attached the dive light to one of my harness D-rings with a snap bolt and a key ring loop. Due to some issues associated with rust and ergonomics, I would like to switch to a proper retractor. Can anybody recommend a...
