Halcyon worth it for open water?

Sorry boss! I'll do 20 hail JJ's for pennance. Jesus tapdancing christ. All I was pointing out was that if he was teaching he has to consider more than just which wing he wants to buy. It sounds like the shops in the area have no problem with the rig instructors teach in, so he has no...

Halcyon worth it for open water?

I paid £30 for my backplate, £10 for webbing/d-rings and £220 for the diverite classic (rec wing is the same price) To me, £40 is peanuts compared to £220.

Halcyon worth it for open water?

Before everyone starts foaming at the mouth.. (oops, too late.) Alot of people have suggested how modular the system is, how you can easily swap wings, etc. This is all true. However, keep in mind that the air cel/wing basically IS the BC. The webbing and BP can be had for nearly peanuts...

    PADI /NAUI / SSI Rescue

If I was OW, I would want to be deco trained before attempting a dive to 130'. The PADI RDP only gives 9min bottom time at that depth, including descent. Thats not long enough for me - especially since you would be rushing around the wreck to try to see everything which means increased...

    Inverted twin cylinders

I think it goes without saying that you need one if you are diving with an isolation manifold. You can get hoses cut to length - well, I can over here.. I assume you can in the US too. As I said previously, I dive right-way-up doubles. However, if I was going to invert, I would probably...

    Inverted twin cylinders

When you close the manifold, regardless of whether it has a slob knob or not, you are "relying on a piece of equipment for a mission critical application like a valve shutdown". I agree, a slob knob has more potential points of failure. But so does a twinset compared to a single cylinder...

    bent bad in Grand cayman

Sorry about what happened.. but my most important question is: Did you log the chamber dives??? :eyebrow:

    Inverted twin cylinders

"Normal Twinset" CONS: - It's unnecessary. You're using convention to dictate your gear choices. Why try to contort yourself and break your shoulderds when you don't have to? relying on your ability to reach behind you is unnecessary, since inverting makes it *much* easier to reach the...

DCS - saw it 1st time in my life

So what's the point in diving nitrox?

DCS - saw it 1st time in my life

Sorry mania, but I'm pretty sure in this case you aren't reducing your CNS risk or changng the ppo2. You *are* reducing your nitrogen loading though.. nurkuj bezpiecznie!

DCS - saw it 1st time in my life

It basically makes the dive more conservative. eg. You can technically stay down for 30mn on nitrox, but if you dive an air table you may only be allowed to stay for 25min. In this case, it gives you a 5min 'buffer'.

    BCD-Bp/W----WHY?

I didn't mean it in a 'DIR sense'. I meant I dont want to tell people who are way more experienced than me that the way they have been diving for the last 10 years is wrong.

    BCD-Bp/W----WHY?

Whatever. I personally know people who dive twinsets and stages in the 160' range doing decompression diving wearing jacket BC's. I'd hate to tell them they have been 'doing it wrong' all these years.

    Padi rescue Diver Swim requirements??

These sound like padi divemaster requirements. I have completed padi rescue and can confirm there is no swim test. Maybe you are confusing ssac and padi mogwai?

    BCD-Bp/W----WHY?

scubaboard as a whole seem to have a rabid affection for the wing. When people ask "which bcd is better? A or B?" at LEAST 1 and usually many, many more people will reply "well, actually C, which is a bp/w. You should try this because ..." and they trot out the time-honored reasons why a wing...

DCS - saw it 1st time in my life

I've read up a fair bit about in water recompression. The idea is to force the bubbles back 'into solution'. I would have gone down on air with a spike to at least 60ft (preferable deeper, maybe 100-120) for 5 minutes, then slowly come back up, switching to o2 at 20ft. Richard Pyle's...

    DIR recreational deco?

What I was saying in my original post was this: Nobody on earth knows what the best deco theory is. Just because GUE have the highest standards of training for SCUBA dosen't mean they know more about deco theory than anyone else. Everyone has a theory on deco and no one theory is any...

    DIR recreational deco?

I agree. Especially on something like deco theory. Remember, when you take the class you get one persons view on how deco works - that dosen't mean it's right. Theories change with time, which is why we dive with helium now rather than deep air. I'm sure in another 10 years time we will be...

DCS - saw it 1st time in my life

Polish people are the most frugal people I have ever met and I should know - I married one. (my wife's favourite saying: "We have to economise") You live in America. Were you born there? Have you even been to Poland?

Should I Start with a DRY suit ?

Go Dry! As for the brand, I'd say it dosen't really matter so long as the suit is durable and is water/air tight. I prefer trilaminate so the level of warmth for me is dependent on the undersuit. If you're new, try to get a course thrown in. I got a good deal on a new suit, the padi...
