    Decompression stop for shallow dives?

Hey! Nobody told me that by taking DIR-F you can ignore the laws of physics.. I stand corrected.

    Decompression stop for shallow dives?

Because if you are perfectly horizontal, it's difficult to dump air as you ascend. If you can dump air while you are "horizontal", then you are not horizontal are you? I also have a fundamental issue with using breath control to ascend as you are filling your lungs, holding your breath and...

How did the Jewfish get it's name?

I remember a woman from the US working in Australia while I was there and asking: Her: "So, do you have many African Americans over here?" Me: "A few I guess, but mostly tourists.." Her: "What about the ones that were already here when the English settled?" Me: "I had no idea there were...

Trying to decide the best hoseless computer?

You may also want to look at the just-released uwatec Smart Tek. It's a 3 gas nitrox computer that supports 3 transmitters - 1 backgas and 2 stage/deco bottles. You can buy the transmitters seperately. Don't know the price, but it's probably expensive.

    Packing a Pelican 1650

Hey reefraff, my 1650 doesn't have wheels - when did they start doing that? Also, I happen to like the back of the plane :)

    Thimble SPGs on Deco Bottles?

Hows that different to a deco bottle? If you have planned the dive properly, you know you are carrying enough deco gas. All you need to do is confirm the pressue before the dive and then turn off the reg so it has no chance of freeflowing while diving. When it's out, it's out - having an...

    Offgassing in my stomache?

I thought I may have DCS or AGE from the pool one day because my stomach hurt like hell after ascending. I was fine a couple of days later and then worked out what happened. I was practicing using the purge method of reg clearing (I usually use blast) and swallowed some air into my stomach -...

Uncle Pug goes to Fiji ~ discussion thread open for posting

Get ready to feel guilty when filling in your logbook - after a warm water dive I feel like I haven't "done" anything. It's just not a real dive if your not wearing a 5mm hood & gloves + drysuit!

More UK deaths - whats happening

The biggest & most tightly packed school of fish I've ever seen was on a 42m wreck dive in the UK. I'm crap at identifying fish - all I can say is that they were all brown :) But it was way more fish than I've seen on both the GBR and red sea - problem is, they are really boooring.

    trolling. Or, applying new knowledge

Well, there are more insurance companies in the world that provide dive insurance than just DAN. However, to be honest I've never read it on the DAN policy - I've just been told about it by the DM/instructors on boats in both the Red Sea and Menorca. They could have been talking about...

    trolling. Or, applying new knowledge

I wasn't trivialising it. Although if you believe some of the comments on here about instructors sometimes, I find it hard to believe it's a great course.. but in my post above I certainly wasn't taking that stance. However, you proved my point. There is no new dive skills introduced with...

    trolling. Or, applying new knowledge

Exactly how many new dive skills are introduced in the PADI divemaster, assistant instructor and instructor classes? I actually don't know for sure. But I have read on here that there are no new dive skills introduced - just the reinforcement of current skills (ie. demonstration qualiy mask...

Is it me or is safety not a priority for some DMs?!? (Sorry..long post)

I tend to agree with pt40fathoms. Everybody is a certified diver so you shouldn't even need a DM. In fact, I prefer not to have one at all and got a little pissed that in the red sea you have to have one and follow him at all times. On your second dive.. think of it from the DM's point of...

Okay, maybe I came across as a bit cavalier.. You're right of course. Every dive is easy until something goes wrong.

    BP wing from the start???

I completely agree. I have only taken off my twinset on the surface two times and both times it was a complete b%@*h to get back into. I couldn't imagine how diffificult it would be for a new diver in the pool with continous webbing (because thats what they read on scubaboard to be the...

    trolling. Or, applying new knowledge

Well simply from an insurance perspective - if you want to still be insured, you should never exceed your qualification. But at the extreme end of the scale, what happens when you want to dive OC beyond 100m? because that's the deepest qualification you can get. I believe you have to...

    S cylinder?

I more than probably anyone on this board get annoyed that most of the time people's advice on this board amounts to 'take a class'. However, in this case it may be prudent advice (especially if your profile info and # of dives is still correct). If you don't want to spring for the TDI gas...

    reason for two computers??

I don't think you can equate them. I'm not bad at guessing my SPG, but I'm not great either. But I have no idea how to guess my depth. Depending on where you are, 20m looks the same as 80+m. You need a torch if you are going below 20m in the UK. You may have an idea from 10m to the...

I thought he used to say: "I don't drink ..." "I don't smoke ..." "I don't sniff no coke" well, you guys may not know Mental as Anything in the US.
