Changing batteries on a 2nd boat dive - yes or no?

I dive off a small personal boat a lot on Montery and dove off a small boat in Cozumel that wasn't set up for photography. I change my batteries between all dives. I tend to just dry off the housing with a towel, find a quiet corner of the boat, put the housing on the towel and open err up. I...

What job supports your UW photography habit?

Computer programmy kind of guy. I also live in Monterey so that eats up lots of my money. Luckily i have almost all the toys i'll ever buy for uw photography. Just a...couple...more...things.

    Night dive settings

Not gonna get anything without using the internal flash. It also makes it much easier if you can attach a dive light in some way to the camera. It's pretty tricky (in my experience) to aim a dive light in one hand and focus/take the picture in the other hand. I use a pretty small mini Q40 LED...

Time to start thinking about an upgrade ...

Fuji E900 should be on your short list. It's got manual controls, RAW if you want, no shutter lag, long battery life, very sharp pics (especially macro). I dunno if the F10 uses xd cards but if so those will be compatable with the E900. That said internal flash is pretty much only going to...

    Using a BC

Never add/remove air from your BC to actually move yourself up or down the water column. Use your lungs or, if that's not enough, fin up/down. You want your BC to be inflated enough to be neutral at your depth. The deeper you go the more air your BC will need and vice versa. Chris

Inflexibility of DSLR vs compact: split from 20D lenses

I dunno i made a 20x30 print from my Fuji 810. Looks pretty good. You might be right with selling prints i have no idea on that but modern P&S cameras have enough megapixels and nice enough sensors to make large prints that looks nice. YMMV Chris

    What scares fish?

I've found sometimes fish don't like my camera head-on. They sometimes turn 180 degrees and show me their butts. I imagine this is probably a good idea if some predator is getting near...may as well be facing the right direction to run. I've found slow smooth movements help keep fish calm...

    Digital Delay

I only have experience with the Fuji F810 digi cam but can say that it doesn't have any shutter lag between getting focus lock and taking the picture. I think the newer E900 is the same way. Maybe the newer generations of camera will solve your problems. There are many reasons to go DSLR...

Can you simulate UW light conditions

You can definitely get a feel for manual settings above water without simulating underwater. Just take pictures of little flowers and anything else. Force yourself to use full manual and you'll get the hang of the settings.

    Butterfly house?

Not the same thing but they are close. Butterfly House is a great shore dive that i've found has lots of little critters (nudis especially). It's tucked back in Carmel and parking is very limited but i've had good luck finding room. Here's how i get to the spot: If you are going south on 1...

    Attention Monterey divers

I'm diving in the morning but i'll prob swing by 2ish and see if you're still around. I'm definitely curious. Chris

    Online dive logs

Yeah i use Scubase. I can automatically take the dives from my (dive)computer to my PC. I'm not gonna go online and enter info by hand. I only log at all because PC's make it easy ;)

ISO vs exposure compensation in a digital

Read this post again it explains what exposure compensation is. It won't miraculously make pictures brighter or darker. It just changes the settings (shutterspeed, aperture) that the camera chooses when in auto modes. It does nothing in manual mode.

    Newbie with a light question

The UK C8 is bright enough for me to use as my primary in murky waters. Though the Princeton Shockwave LED is super cool and i'm upgrading to that. For diving clear tropical waters the PT Shockwave will be more than enough light.

    Drift diving

Kicking into the current is gonna be the only way to stop in a current. You can look for shadows in the current behind coral mounds or something to tuck into. Overall i found taking macro/critter picks to be tough in Cozumel. I used my air faster that i normally would in warm water and would...

    atomic or apollo split fins

I like my Bio fins. You don't need spring straps mostly a personal preference. The included straps are quite sturdy.

Best non-dSLR for u/w and land?

From what i've heard the x0x0 line since the 5050 isn't the best choice for underwater. For my money i'd say the Fuji E900 is your best choice for underwater digicam right now. It will also take great above water pics but you need some special adapter if you want to add any add-on lenses above...

    Princeton tec rules!(lights)

I've had nothing but good service from UK. Don't own any Princeton Tec lights but UK sent me a brand new light after one of mine flooded a while back. YMMV

Trays - are different ones mostly comparable??

I like ULCS because it keeps my whole system smaller and lighter.
