    Apeks question

Sounds good to me. Just keep it in the negative position when it's under your chin. I would be more concerned about your TX50 not breathing better than the 40. It should. It sounds like your TX50 is out of adjustment to me. Good luck, Mike

    DIR or Sorta?

That's a good one :thumb:. Actually, everyone seems to be growing potatos around here :). Pdomen, ditch the snorkle and get the right hoses. I prefer a 7' hose over the 5' (which was too short for me with a single tank). A 40" hose works, but a 7' is more streamlined when routed properly...

    Quick Report

We managed to get out this past weekend with Jeff (AKA Great Lakes Diver here on SB) and his buds. We dove the Straits of Mackinaw with my favorite dive charter -- Abyss Dive Charters. Saturday First dive was the Eber Ward (140' max). Water temp was 45F on the bottom and vis neared...

    dir or not dir

The Fundementals book describes the why of most of the aspects of DIR pretty good. There's nothing wrong with being skeptical with anything. Every part of DIR has a well thought out reason behind it which is important to it's whole. It's the completeness of it all that makes it unique and...

    Quick simple question

This pic shows an OMS and Dive Rite H-valve side by side. You can see the barrel o-rings on the Dive Rite. The OMS uses a face o-ring system. Their manifolds work the same way. http://www.northeastscubasupply.com/tanks/h_valves.html Mike

    Limits of DIR

Shoot me an email, Tommy. I'd like to throw that in my notes. Thanks, Mike

    Limits of DIR

WYDT, Yeah, I'm sure I read it, but I don't recall where or when. I didn't pay much attention to it. I'll look around a bit. Mike

Dive Rite Reg or other cold water suggestions

I haven't had a problem with my Apeks regs ice diving with an IP set at 130psi. You can't beat DiveINN's prices, but Simply Scuba allows you to mix second stages and first stages (ie. ATX50/DS4). Mike

AOW diver needs new regulator advice

You'll never outgrow an Apeks. I recommend an ATX50/DS4 or ATX50/DS4. Good luck, Mike

I'll second the practice, practice, practice comment by GM. Mike

    Limits of DIR

I've heard of sidemount DIR, but I'm not fmiliar with the specifics of it. Somewhere I heard George describing how they setup sidemounts. Personally, if I can't fit, I ain't goin' :). Mike

    DIR or Sorta?

Yeah, I was thinking about Lost Troll, but I'll always be a Yooper at heart. Maybe if I lose my accent, I'll have to rethink. I'm just a lost Yooper for now :D. When are you coming up to the Straits? Mike

    DIR or Sorta?

Me too. I'm closer to strict DIR according to GUE than I am according to George. Since he coined it all, I guess it's up to him in the end. However, since GUE teaches DIR every day, then it can get kinda confusing for some people. I approach DIR in principle as well as the specifics. Mike

    DIR or Sorta?

Assuming strict DIR is WKPP. Regarding equipment, I'm not too far off. I have my lift bag mounted to my plate under my right arm which isn't strict DIR and, depending on who you talk to, my argon bottle mounted to the left side of the plate isn't strict DIR. I use an Abyss Pro Kevlar TX...

    tx40 to atx50

Regarding performance, there is definately a difference between the adjustable seconds and the TX40. I don't think there is a difference in performance between the TX50 and the ATX50, but the ATX is certainly smaller and lighter than both the TX50 and TX40. I would recommend an adjustable...

Is a long safety stop beneficial?

A long safety stop is fine, just don't shoot to the surface afterwards. Personally, I place more weight on an extremely slow final ascent than simply a stop at 20' (for rec dives) followed by an immediate ascent to the surface. I use a 4'-5'/min final ascent for all my "substantial" dives (rec...

    halcyon worth the price?

Is anything in this industry really worth what they are getting? The Halcyon wing is worth the money as compared to other stuff out there. A plate is a plate; webbing is webbing; and hardware is hardware. Good luck, Mike

    Apeks Qs

You made a fine choice in the ATX50/DS4, though I wouldn't have bought an ATX40 for the octo (the weight savings for a backup is irrelavent). There's simply no reason to spend the extra cash, and the DS4 will take you anywhere you want to go. The TX100 firsts are a bit better for doubles, but...

    TDI - Extended Range Course

Skip it and get trimix. You can't be taught to deal with narcosis. You don't need deep air training to use trimix. Be wary of any instructor who tells you can learn, adapt, or deal with narcosis reliably and who is willing to take you to such depths just to prove a needless point. Try to go...

    gear configuration question

Well, I've never seen the need for a break away on my primary. Even if it's clipped off, the OOA diver will go for the reg in your mouth, and you'll go for the one under your chin. Using cave line was how I learned to do it by Irvine and JJ several years ago, so that's just what I've always...
