DPV proficiency - how long before you are comfortable?

There's a difference between open water DPV use and cave DPV use. The latter really should require formal instruction from a cave DPV instructor, now so much for the scooter's use but for the gas planning, other contingency planning, tow and gas share techniques, etc. I'm also a very strong...

    New DPV - Dive Xtras

Dive Xtras indicated "by Christmas" at DEMA. As of Wednesday afternoon, they were working on building and testing them, but they had no firm ship date yet on the three I ordered at DEMA, and I'm very close to the top of the order list. I'm hoping to meet with a customer to deliver one the...

    Diver dies in Manatee Springs

That's unfortunate, the original had some very good and very specific information in it. I suppose there was pressure not to release any details until there is the final, and usually mythical, accident report. It's reasonable to assume that they were not aware it was now a restriction. Many...

    Diver dies in Manatee Springs

Given that the deceased was reported to be in back mounted LP 85s, it's plausible that the team was not aware that it was now a tight, basically side mount only restriction.

    New DPV - Dive Xtras

The 9 Ah and 12 Ah have the same weight and form factor and require less ballast. For the smaller batteries you can add more ballast the scooter to achieve neutral buoyancy and level trim. Obviously the weight out of the water will be the same regardless of the batteries chosen, when the...

    New DPV - Dive Xtras

The Piranha and BlackTip both use DeWalt compatible 18/20 volt batteries, not just the DeWalt batteries but also the DeWalt compatible generics by Enegitech, Waitley, etc. The DeWalt branded batteries arguably retain more capacity 1 to 2 years out, but they also cost twice as much, so it...

    New DPV - Dive Xtras

That's very true. $1500 is for the BlackTip DPV only. However that lets the customer configure the batteries based on their preferences and needs. At the low end the total for the DPV, batteries and charger will be about $1,605. Even if you go the most expensive route the total cost of DPV...

    Yamaha scooter advice

The range and burn time of the BlackTip with 5 Ah batteries is impressive when you consider it alongside the NiMh Sierra. The 12 Ah BlackTip is also very impressive when you consider range and burn time at 150 fpm where it hangs right in there with the Cuda and the P1.

    Yamaha scooter advice

63 pounds was per Peter Link, the engineer at Dive Xtras who did most of the design work on the BlackTip, in our discussion at DEMA. I didn't ask about the boost mode, or the various time limits on it due to potential underlying temperature limits, as it wasn't up on the website yet when I was...

    Yamaha scooter advice

I'll second the BlackTip. It's a real DPV designed for divers rather than swimmers. It has 63 pounds of thrust and just over 2 hours of run time at 150 fpm.

    New DPV - Dive Xtras

I agree it's well suited for wreck diving - with one caveat. The BlackTip, like the P1 weighs 24 pounds and it's crew friendly on a dive boat. Crew on a wreck charter are likely to be enticed to hand you a 24 pound scooter and lift it back out of the water for you. They are a lot less likely...

I don't believe that is the case with the generic batteries.

    New DPV - Dive Xtras

The speeds are like those on the Piranha, in that they are separate, distinct speeds, not like a dimmer switch. Brushed motors have a softer start than brushless motors. The old Oceanic based motors had brushes and the start was what you got. The Oceanic based motors also varied a lot in...

Dive Xtras BlackTip - DEMA report

The motor is sealed and water cooled via conduction through the motor's case. There are pros and cons to the speed control. I only use 5 gears on my P1 and P2, starting at 75% power with 100% power above the start and 50%, 25% (which gives 150 fpm) and 15 % below the start. I limit it to 5...

    New DPV - Dive Xtras

It's certainly an option as you can ballast the BlackTip to be neutral with any of them. Technically, DeWalt uses separate cells in their larger 9 Ah and 12 Ah batteries to stay under the 100 watt limit used in the US. It should still work internationally, but I'd check first as I'm not...

    New DPV - Dive Xtras

Don Six is correct. DeWalt's 9 Ah and 12 Ah batteries are technically comprised of separate cells, each of which is less than 100 watts. The cells are physically separated with the storage cover attached and thus TSA legal. I worried about this when I started selling Dive Xtras scooters 3...

Dive Xtras BlackTip - DEMA report

Dive Xtras made an announcement about the BlackTip to it's dealers the day before DEMA and I was very excited but skeptical. However, I got to see it at DEMA and speak at length with Peter Link, the engineer at Dive Xtras who did most of the design work. I absolutely hate the term "game...

    New DPV - Dive Xtras

Here is what I know about the BlackTip straight from the mouth of Peter Link, the engineer who did most of the design work: 1) Depth rating: The design depth is 300 meters (330 ft). It has however been tested to 600', at which it non catastrophically fail. What does that mean? It means the...

    Need help identifying equipment

I'm going to take a slightly different track on price and suggest that a DA Aquamaster with no significant scratches or dents, and with original hoses and mouthpiece that are still soft and supple with no cracks of weather checking, it'll be worth about $400 to a collector. Even if it's got...

    Workbench Update!

You may have some issues with moisture removal if you don't have some form of intercooling between the compressor and the moisture separator. The hot hair from the compressor needs to be cooled to allow the water vapor to condense, so that it can be removed by the water trap. If not, the...
