Tricks and Tips that Save Pennies

Used Equipment. You can save a lot by buying Wetsuits, BCDs, fins, etc. used. Regulators are more problematic; make sure they have been serviced within the last year. Every year hundreds of High School / College graduates get complete scuba sets as presents. Many of them dive a few times and...

    Gear cleaning

I've never subscribed to "gotta pressurize" school of regulator cleaning and I've had regulators that lasted more than 20 years. I keep a covered bucket of fresh water in the back of my truck and put the regs, mask, knife, etc. in while I drive home, then just hang them up. Everything else...

Post Your Pretty Funny Stuff Here

This was translated from the Arabic and posted on an Iraqi blog: A financial expert was asked to explain in simple layman's terms the reasons behind the recent stock market crash. He thought for a while and said: “A man traveled to a far away village and offered its inhabitants to buy...

    IST Regulators

I have been diving an IST for a couple of years. Bought it at Costco as a back up reg, it moved to first string when I couldn't get my Dacor serviced anymore. Never had a problem with it in over 50 dives.

Ok, he's goin to turn off my air? and I'm to do an e.b.a?

Back in the sixties I was working as a lifeguard at the pool in the Pentagon. (yes, they have a pool) As a final exam for their Basic Scuba class, the instructor blacked out the students masks, then free dove around them, turning off their air and pulling off their fins. You weren't supposed...

    Pony bottle mounting options?

I have a 19 cf. pony. I tried tank mounting it first, but found it made the valve to hard to reach. Then I slung it off one strap of my harness, but that made donning my rig a big problem if I slung it first, and I had to struggle to attach it if I had the harness already on. Now I sling it...

The ocean sure beats the quarry!

Trust me, Sydney has no monopoly on surge. Just ask the SoCal lobsters who hang on the wall laughing as I rocket past them left to right, then right to left.

    What're they Thinkin?

"Morales will still be confined because he was found to be already suffering from diabetes and a previous respiratory ailment. " Boy, the salvage company must do a rigid medical check-up on their divers, huh?

Baja 2008 trip report & pix

Ken, Great pictures and good report. Bummer about the conditions, but it was still better the SoCal, I'm sure. An alternate travel arrangement I've done (since nobody flies to La Paz from San Diego) is to drive to the border, leave the truck in a secure lot, and taxi to the TJ airport.

    Californial Lobster Season Update

I've done OK in San Diego, 11 so far after 6 dives. All dives in the 6 - 19 ft range. Seen some big ones back in the holes, but they won't come out. I am seeing more and bigger red kelp crabs than I remember from previous years. Anyone know if they are good to eat?

    Rubber & led

Lead blocks have less surface area per pound, so they experience less erosion. The pellets, on the other hand, are better protected from abrasion. If you tend to whack into things while diving, the pellets might be better. Elementary lead is not soluble in water, but it's compounds can be...

    Am I overreacting or not?

If you are new to scuba, you need to be diving with a good buddy, preferably one with more experience than you. If you are both inexperienced, you can compensate by doing conservative dive profiles and practicing good buddy skills. You do not need to check his gauges for him, but the two...

    Horns of a dilemma

This was a first. I was banging around in 3-5 ft viz looking for lobster last night when I saw a potentially legal one under a ledge. As I lined up to make my grab I noticed that the rock on the bottom of the niche had fins!! My lobster was hiding behind a sleeping Horn Shark. While I...

    Asian Diving club

Exclusionary organizations are only racist if there is an economic benefit to them. The reason golf clubs, yacht clubs, etc. were forced to change membership rules that excluded people on the basis of race or gender is that they can function as an "old boys" network that gives their members a...

Messy dive shops... do you care?

The dive shops I've always preferred seemed to be the messy ones. It meant the owners didn't have time to straighten up because they were out diving. They also seemed to be the ones with the most knowledgeable staff, and the least likely to adopt inane policies about what tanks they would fill.
