    San Diego accident

MY normal buddy is my GF and I always check her air, even though she is an experienced diver (over 100 dives) and uses less air then me. Four eyes are better than two.

First time Catalina- shore or boat?

Do the boat dive. He can follow your bubbles in a kayak or snorkel above you, visibility is usually good enough this time of year to see the bottom from 30 - 50 feet. The casino is a good shore dive, but there are so many better dives from the boats that you should be able to set the hook in...

    Scuba equipment

Usually the gear rental is included in the certification class fee. Get your own mask, fins and snorkel, let the shop supply the rest. That way you get to try out some equipment for free. Try and get your dad to drive you to the dive store for you lessons. If he hangs around there long...

    shark encounters off calif?

Sharks just aren't a threat of any significance in SoCal. In thirty years of diving I've seen one "big" shark, a six footer, that swam by about 30 feet below us at the Blue Grotto on Catalina. It ignored us. While others have reported seeing Great Whites while diving, they were brief sightings...

Licenced pilot, powerboater, now thinking diving

If you're a licensed pilot, you should check with some of the local dive boat operators. The ones in SoCal are often looking for boat captains, could be the same up there. Get paid while you learn the sport! Oh, did you mean airplane pilot?

How Many NDL fun dives do you do per day?

Not enough. I'm usually limited by available time and available tanks. I'm down to 4 tanks now (curse you, Luxfer, for you stupid alloy) When I take the boat to Catalina (10 days and counting) it's 2 - 3 dives per day; depending if my GF does 1 or 2.

    Shares on Liveaboard Vessel

There have been several attempts made to do timeshare cruise ships over the years, and I think there are a few operating now, but most of them foundered on the issue of regulation and licensing. If you are only going to be operating in one jurisdiction it might be possible, but I would check...

    Lobster hunting

9 times out of ten a lobster will take off backwards when you go to grab it. Aim at the tip of the tail and it will usually jump right into your hand. The tenth time it will jet forward, bouncing off your chest while you beat your chest with futile attempts to grab it, looking like you're...

    Saw something new today

They actually where mating?? Right out in the open?? That's just wrong. Somebody tell them to rent a room. It didn't seem to be a particularly strenuous activity; of course, I don't know how strenuous I would be, doing it below the thermocline. :eyebrow: Wikipedia says some cormorants...

    Diving and metabolism

Maybe when diving in Norway. I know a few divers around here whose physiques argue strongly against it. Calories Burned, BMI, BMR & RMR Calculator | CaloriesPerHour.com says a person my weight would burn 667 calories per hour at general scuba diving, 1,143 cph at scuba diving as a navy...

    How to use a gym?

Always do some cardio first to get your heart rate up and warm up the muscles. Then do some mild stretches before doing the resistance work to help prevent injury. Stretch out again after at the end of the work-out to increase flexibility. Vary the routine (legs one day, upper body the next)...

    Saw something new today

I was cruising the south wall at La Jolla Shores this evening, 55 ft deep, when I was buzzed by a cormorant . It just seemed to be cruising too, though it's cruising speed was at least double mine. I didn't know they went that deep. And whats up with the Sea Hare orgys down there? Saw...

    Diving from an inflatable boat

Go to the Boating Equipment Forum http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/boating-equipment/ and do a search for inflatable. There are several threads with good info, at least one deals with Florida. FWIW I think your assumptions are correct.

Coming to San Diego, thinking of trying to get a couple dives in

5 mil will work for some people, I dove one year round for decades, now I've switched to 7. We don't tow flags. Asking a Californian to plan something two months in advance is like asking a woman to be quiet; they might try to do it but it probably won't last.

    Why your Avatar?

Screen name is my screen name for everything public. I can't remember more than one. Avatar is a pit bull puppy from a litter my stepdaughter dropped on our doorstep. I use it for my homebrew label when I bother to label my beer. (Howling Puppy Ale)
