I got 34 pounds worth of two pounders for putting into integrated weights to make me sink in a 13mm drysuit. I also found 16 pounds of lead sheeting in a river once while snorkelling so I cut that up and wrap it around straps and stuff as trim weights.
I just use my computer as a bottom timer so normally I would just carry on as normal using my watch/depth gauge. I say "normally" because last time my computer died on me I looked over to see my watch fill with water and grind to a halt as well!
Ive done rescue drills a few times on a guy who has the i3 control system on his BCD. When i do rescues i come i grab them from the front and lift them that way so i never encountered problems reaching the controls. Once i got used to it i actually found it was a remarkably easy system to use...
Never had to use my octo in anger thankfully, but ive used it the odd time to let my primary warm up when diving in very cold water. Also ill occasionally finish the last 5 mins of a dive on my alternate just to give it some use and make sure its still breathing ok.
Ive used an old Avon full face mask a few times, this was partly to help with freezing cold water on the face but mainly just to try it for its own sake. Definitely worth doing a course since there are certain things that need to be taken into consideration when diving these things that you...
And if you want to go even MORE critical, try getting into u/w photography/video while wearing vintage scuba equipment :D
I had one year during my student days where i lived just across the street from the local dive shop, that was an extremely dangerous time for me as I spent alot of time...
I remember myself and a group of divers having an interesting conversation with a group of hillwalkers where we both said pretty much the exact same things to each other with us quizzing them about hillwalking and them quizzing us about diving:
"How do you carry all that heavy equipment?"
"You...
I wear or carry one all the time since I do most of my diving in oceans from the shore. The last few years ive only ever had to use it in anger once so I kinda look at it the same way I look at my octopus, a bit of a pain, adds clutter and rarely if ever used but the one time you need it its...
I like to use one of these snaps on my left hip:
I can run my hose over my left shoulder and clip it off and it lies flat against me, if I want to look at it there's enough articulation that I can slide the clip up the hose enough to allow me to lift the gauge up to my face.
Ive also been...
I have a Suunto SK-7 on my console and a Suunto SK-5 on my wrist. I find the SK-7 tends to allow me to get a more accurate reading if i want to know the exact degrees but the SK-5 is alot less picky and is extremely fast to settle on north.
I also find the SK-5 easier to read if I just want to...
For the cost of a decent watch that I knew wouldn't fail on me or give time incorrectly I was able to buy a low end computer that did the same thing with the advantage of having a depth gauge built into it too! Though I did end up with my Comp plus dive watch and depth gauge just so I had all my...
Ive only ever dived in Scotland myself which is all cold water. We have a pretty good variety of life and sites about though it varies a bit depending on the weather :D Im not much of a wreck person preferring to dive reefs with lots of life and I can generally find enough to keep me happy. Ive...
I switched to a twin hose a couple of years ago (A new mistral, considered by most to be quite a bad twin hose and not to be confused with the excellent "old" single stage mistral) , and have been diving it once or twice a week ever since. So far I would say it has been as reliable if not more...
I wear one of these masks:
And i have found you can take it off and put it on upsidown and it will still seal and can be cleared. Best of all when worn upsidown the nose pockets become giant eyebrows! Ive had a few people giving me shocked and confused looks while doing that :)
Moving to a twin hose i had very similar experiences. Ive found there is a certain art to diving a twin hose, its a bit like riding a bike. Yes it falls over if you try to leave it standing since it only has two wheels/free flows if you lie on your back with the mouthpiece out due to the demand...
Usually if im diving in a group of 3 one of us will go up front and act as leader. The two behind then follow and keep and eye on each other and the guy in front.
Didn't do this on April fools but found a scrap fire extinguisher on the seabed so me and my buddy came out before the other guys in my group, switched my dive tank for the extinguisher then stood waist deep in the water and when the rest of my group surfaced acted like I was just coming out...
