As others have said, the issue won't be during the dives but tired at the end of the day. But, in my opinion, that's just fine. When I'm on a once-in-a-lifetime dive vacation, my motto is that I'll rest when I'm dead. In the meantime, let's go diving!

I'm going to Roatan next week and I'll do 5 dives a day. The last two of the day are probably relatively shallow shore dives and I have SIT reset to Zero enabled on my Mares Quad - nice feature and I silence any audio alarms - another nice feature. LOL

You'll be fine - lotsa water, not much alcohol and try to smoke a little less. Go to bed early

A good idea but there has to be a point where you listen to what your body and mind are telling you and decide enough is enough. I did a weeks liveaboard on the Red Sea with 21 dives available but sat out two of them. Reason for sitting out the first of those was tiredness/injury (my boots had rubbed my ankle raw at the sides so I needed to let them rest & scab a bit) the second I sat out was due to surge (I wasn't comfortable in the surge on one of the wrecks just off a reef that was in the direct current so decided to sit it out).

As they saying goes there isn't anything down there worth dying for. No matter the site, I can always try to get back there in the future.

If your ears can stand it, go for it. I had to skip one dive in the middle of the week last year to let my ears rest when I had 17 dives in 5 days (would have been 18 if I hadn't skipped the one).

The other side of the coin.... A year ago I was in the worst shape of my life. Obese (320 pounds), drinking, cigar smoking and aerobically pathetic. I did minimum 3 dives a day Sunday thru Thursday, with two of those days 4 dives a day. Friday was 2 dives in the AM followed by an afternoon of walking the town and drinking beer.

Concierge service for tanks... we loaded and unloaded our gear and weights from the boat to the locker every night.

I was for damn sure tired and slept good every night but I had zero problems with stamina. As others have said, listen to your body.

Now for the good news... Since that last trip Ive gone from 320 to 240 (still a WIP) and have been in the gym 4 days a week literally since that trip. I still expect to be tired after my upcoming trip but for damn sure Ill be a much happier diver.

Go by how you feel. If the diving conditions and environment are not too demanding then you should be fine. I frequently dive liveaboards and have found 3 dives a day is pretty much my limit.

As others have said... stay hydrated, get a good night's sleep, and stay out of long exposures under the hot sun. If you're too tired or not feeling up to it, then it's ok to skip the dive.

Have a fun trip.

I can't speak for anyone else, but in the past I've done seven dives in a single day. However that was in my 50s after I'd been diving for 35+ years. Eight dives in three days shouldn't be a problem if you follow proper depth restrictions and surface intervals.

Hello!
I am getting my Advanced Open Water certification in Semporna, Malaysia which will consist of five dives over two days in early June. I would then like to do a three dives in one day package in Sipadan. I've only logged one dive (a wreck dive off Aramoana in New Zealand in Feb 2017) outside of my Open Water cert (Oct 2016) but I am a fit 30 year old. Will I most likely be fine (tired wise) if I do the 5 dives to get my Advanced over two days and then the 3 dives in Sipadan on the third day or should I rest a day in between? I'd like to just do them all over 3 days since there isn't a ton to do in the area outside of diving and that would mean cheaper accommodation but I don't want to be exhausted! Any advice would be appreciated!

As you can see here, everyone on SB is super fit and a diving god...

But seriously... Any time in life one starts a new type of physical activity, it is normal that that activity will be more physically and mentally taxing. Later, as you've developed experience and skill, the same activity becomes less taxing in every way. Also, taking classes will often be more taxing than when you are engaged in the same activity just for fun.

You are young and fit. But, given your amount of experience with diving, my personal opinion is that you will probably enjoy it more and be less likely to have adrenaline masking an underlying fatigue if you plan for a rest day between your AOW class and your 3-dive day.

2 full days of class that CAN be taxing both mentally and physically, depending on the instructor, is likely to leave its mark. You are gung-ho and confident in yourself. You would probably be perfectly fine for the 3rd day of fun diving. The issue (in my mind) is the likelihood that you will be a bit mentally fatigued and not even realize it. If everything goes your way that day, you'd never know it. But, if something unexpected happens, that mental fatigue could be the difference between reacting like you should and reacting in a poorly-chosen way.

It doesn't sound like you even have enough dives to really form a good self-judgment about what shape you will be in physically and mentally after your AOW. When you have 20 or 30 dives under your belt, you'll have a much better ability to self-assess that kind of thing. Right now, since you came here and asked for our thoughts, my thought is that you would be doing yourself a favor to plan for a rest day. You may even find that you're glad you have it just so that you can spend some time shopping for bits you want to take on your dives or making changes to gear you're using. And I definitely think the rest day will have you even more ready and excited for the day of fun diving - and get even more enjoyment out of it.

Just my $0.02.

Have fun!!

It's going to depend on your own personal health, but here's my feedback:

36 years old, did a liveaboard (3 days/2 nights) to get my AOW after a few years of getting my OW. I'm pretty normal weight, do light workouts regularly.

Day 1: 4 dives - felt fine
Day 2: 5 dives - was feeling quite tired by dive 4 and prob should have skipped it. After some rest I felt OK for my night dive.
Day 3: 3 dives - was fine in the morning, but after getting back off the boat I was absolutely exhausted/destroyed that day.

Thats said, it was a 5:30am wakeup call 2 days in a row which probably made a big difference.

Obviously 12 days within 3 days is a lot more than 5 over 2 days, though. IMO you'll be fine, but keep in mind all other aspects of getting around and sleep.

wake me up at 5:30 2 days in a row and I'll bite your head off and then fall asleep underwater...
