Genesis was banned? If so, that's too bad...he often contributed a lot of good info.

No, it doesnt appear so. He is on right now...

H2Andy:
unfortunately, someone has to enforce the TOS. I don't think the trash analogy is valid.

What in the TOS did the originator of the thread saying that “management” should work things out Genesis violate? Or if I want to get rid of a thread can I simple violate the TOS to get the thread pulled in it’s entirety?

johhythan:

you are certainly entitled to your opinon. I would certainly agree that it is preferable, if the situation allows it, to pull a single post rather than the whole thread.

sometimes, the tone and tenor of the thread is set by the first post, and pulling the whole thing makes sense because it will lead to little that is constructive.

again, this is not a perfect method, but it's the best we can do at the moment.

it was a thread that quickly lead to users abusing Genesis
and calling him names. I don't agree with him, but there
is no call for abusing a user, no matter how unpopular he is.

H2Andy:
They are being pulled because SB will not tolerate abuse of its members, even if
they are unpopular. Please refrain from making personal attacks, and the thread will
not be pulled.

I just finished writing what I thought was a pretty reasonable argument for why Genesis shouldn't be sanctioned on SB, but when I tried to post it the whole thing disappeared into cyberspace, apparently along with the thread. I'll try once more, but I won't waste as many words in case this one disappears too.

Genesis is a pita. No question about that. But how often do you encounter someone who plays devil's advocate who isn't? His arguments are almost always somewhat wrong, but usually not by much, and the part that's right is worth considering, or at least being aware of. If you disagree strenuously with Genesis, then ignore his posts. It really isn't that hard to do. If you ban everyone with an opinion that differs from the majority then we'll end up awash in yes men, and tedium.

YMMV

he was not banned. he was asked not to express the view
that learning to dive OW and overhead was safer without
an instructor, for obvious reasons.

His profile doesn't say that he's banned. That said, I'm don't know if it is possible to ban someone without changing the member status field.

I find nothing disgraceful about it. I used to work in a bar as a combination bookkeeper, bartender and bouncer. When we tossed someone out (in some cases quite literally), we didn't feel the need to let the other patrons know why or to answer questions about the incident.

We didn't have a set of rules posted. If someone acted up, created problems, acted like a jerk or otherwise detracted from the place, they were asked to behave. If they didn't, they were asked to leave. If they complained, they were escorted out. If they started a fight, they were thrown through a plate glass window into the parking lot.

This situation is somewhat similar. SB is open to the public, but it has rules. People can be asked to behave and can be banned if they don't.

Unfortunately, there's never a plate glass window around when you really need it. :zap1:

Sometimes I read what Genesis had to say, sometimes I skipped the long winded ones, I'm capable of editing what I want to read and what I don't. If you don't like what someone is writing, don't read it. If someone believes its safer to learn to dive on their own than with an instructor on his say so,.......................

we have to balance Genesis' freedom to express his thoughts
and the possible harm to the board and to users that may
stem from what Genesis says.

in balancing the equities, we felt it was proper to ask Genesis
no to spouse his view as to that point on the board.

But its not. SB is under the control of NetDoc and the mods in the same manner that my property is under my control. If its on my property, I decide whether something stays or goes. That would apply even if my neighbor put it there (entirely theoretical, since I've got nice neighbors who also take out their trash).

If its on SB, its entirely appropriate for the mods to decide what stays and what should be discarded.
