There have been many threads on what is the best mask defog, and I am not interested in starting another one of those threads. I have been using Johnson's Baby Shampoo full strength since 1965 and it remains my go to defog. While checking my gear for an upcoming dive trip, I found my small bottle of baby shampoo, that lives in my mask case, was nearly empty with the last of our current large bottle. As I was getting ready to head to the store to get a new supply, my wife showed me a bottle of Johnson's Baby Shampoo and Body Wash that she just bought to try it as a shampoo and body wash. Since it takes forever for us to use up a new bottle of straight baby shampoo for diving and snorkeling, I'm tempted to give it a try on my mask, but I am wondering if anyone has tried the combination product as a mask defog? My gut tells me it will probably work fine, but prefer not to find out I was wrong on the first dive of our upcoming trip. Obviously I can buy a new bottle of straight baby shampoo, but I am willing to use the new product if it works as well. Thank you for any comments if you have used the baby shampoo/body wash.

Just buy a bottle and try it.

Worst case scenario you have a bottle of shampoo and body wash.

From a chemistry perspective, it should work just fine. It's not that Johnson's baby shampoo is magical from a soap perspective (which is what is doing the defog function). My understanding is that the reason it's so widley used is that it's one of the few that doesn't have added colorants/fragrances that cause eye irritation if/when you get a bit in your eyes. Hence, the 'no more tears' tagline.

So, the body wash should do the defog function just fine. It *may* not be as good on the no more tears front, depending on what (if anything) they did to the formulation.

Just my 2PSI as a chemist. I'd go for it, for sure.

The reason why Baby Shampoo was used is because the solution would not be as irritable to your eyes as bath wash or regular shampoo would. In my many years of teaching and diving the manufacturers have made some really good defog. I personally have used Sea Drops and 500 psi. None of these products affect my eyes. %00 psi came as a paste and I would put it on before getting in the water ans I would rinse the excess off in the water. Whe it dries it would leave a whitish film on the mask , that would mean that you still had defog and I would not have to re-apply it after the previous dive. If you don't lose the bottle, defog should last you a long-ling time 20-30 dives. for something as important as making your mask clear underwater, that is such a small investment for your money. Just don't lose the bottle. I keep mine in my mask case and it stays in my mask case. I also have another bottle to hand out, and it is a Instructor size 10 inch bottle so people can't walk away with it unseen........

+1 for spit. Never need to refill the bottle, always have it with you, reef safe and bio compatible. Though lately I have one better: Spit 2.O
Spit 2.0 is what you get after sucking on a Jolley Rancher between dives. This crystal clear, inpenatrable compound has never failed.
If you find you cannot make your own I can fill a small bottle for $20. May take a little while but it will last you years...........

So... I have a question about actual saliva (and not to hijack the thread here)... I have heard of some cases of people actually getting eye infections. That seems to make sense to me since the human mouth is not super clean.

With regards to the baby shampoo/body wash... does it still claim "no tears?"

I use a commercial product that I will keep unnamed... but I am a noob so what do I know. =) I am curious about the saliva thing and the baby shampoo... I would think if anything having baby shampoo in with your gear would help it smell good.

Been using spit since I started diving and lost my first bottle of drops. Over 2000 hours underwater and no issues. But I also did a bunch of SoCal beach dives and lakes. I'll trust my spit over either of those contaminants! :p
That and I brush my teeth......
And lets face it, its not uncommon to dump your sinuses into your mask form time to time.
Yes, the mouth can be a dirty place but I still would rather my spit over something coming out of a factory. From the manufacturer:
Water*, Cocamidopropyl Betaine*, Sodium Cocoyl Isethionate*, Lauryl Glucoside*, PEG-80 Sorbitan Laurate, Glycerin*, Citric Acid*, Sodium Benzoate, PEG-150 Distearate, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate*, Fragrance, Polyquaternium-10, Disodium EDTA
