Powder Plant Beach, Ferndale WA.

Mostly what this spot had going for it was close, accessible shore dive, but it actually turned out to be pretty cool.

After a long ride on the struggle bus.

I got out there and struggled into my gear, slogged into the water and immediately broke a fin strap. I thought about calling it there, but I had made a bunch of configuration changes I figured I might as well try out. Dumped my BCD and still couldn't sink, so was pulling myself along the structure hand over hand trying to stay down. Turns out I didn't have all the air out. Oops.

With that sorted I was finally able to get to the bottom and there I discovered that moving 6 lbs from my waist to the upper tank band was a bit much and I was now head heavy and rolling left. OK, annoying but manageable. I swam out a ways and checked out the critters on the bottom until I hit 1300 lbs and turned it. When I popped up I was within 100 feet of where I started and so I'm calling that a navigational win. Unfortunately, when I left the bottom at 8 feet to spyhop I think I lost my weight pouch off the cam band because I could not get back down and it was gone when I got home.

Highlight of the dive was seeing three white lined nudibranchs. They were significantly larger than I expected and I have never seen nudis before.

I need to get another 6 lbs of lead and try putting it on my lower cam band until I get the trim right.

Air 2080 start, 650 end
Pony 2400/2400
Total time about 30 minutes
Max depth 20 feet

A very rare freshwater dive. We took our son and his mates to a lake on the west coast to do water sports. I packed the dive gear because why not?! Dive wasn't very interesting. Visibility varied between one and five metres. Saw some small fish. Tropical 25 degrees C at the surface, a cool 19 degrees C at 20 metres. Maximum depth 20.3 metres. Dive time 50 minutes (I got bored!).

wow nice boat.

Semi solo in Jupiter.

I know I get off the boat with everybody. I usually get rolling right away and sometimes there are other people around and sometimes there aren’t. If I want to, I can turn and do this modified frog kick (mostly from the ankles) to counteract the current and stay put. Usually it takes a solid minute or two and then I can make out a vertical bubble plume. Sometimes I wait for acknowledgment of positive visual contact, sometimes I don’t. If I’m doing my own thing, I send up a DSMB to make it easy for the Captain and dry DM to track me relative to others. Actually when I send up my DSMB that usually means I’ve made an intentional decision to permanently break off from the wet DM’s gaggle.

Another trip with Dive Tutukaka. It was free as I've given them so much money in the past :p

An unusually social trip for me. Everyone on the boat was very friendly. I met an aspiring young technical diver with all the gear and we ended up diving together (but not buddying) on the second dive. I wanted to try out a new lens for my GoPro which turned out to be awesome. Water temperature 21-22 degrees C.

Shark Fin Cave | Poor Knights | New Zealand
Maximum Depth: 24.5 metres
Dive Time: 60 minutes

Perfect conditions. Visibility was around 20 metres. Messed around in a little cavern before looking at the fish and playing with my GoPro.

Middle Arch | Poor Knights | New Zealand
Maximum Depth: 25.4 metres
Dive Time: 70 minutes

The captain's choice of dive site was odd. It was right next to Middle Arch, one of the most iconic sites at the Knights. While nice, our location was a little humdrum and I couldn't understand why we didn't park up around the corner and dive the arch. I decided to get there under fin power and dive it anyway. The boat crew agreed and gave me 70 minute dive time. I took my new found friend.

Visibility in the arch was stunning by local standards, probably 25 metres. It was loaded with fish. It was like diving in an aquarium. Barring rare large animal encounters, it was as good as it gets at the Poor Knights. My new found friend was absolutely buzzing with the experience and when we surfaced in the air pocket of a small cavern, he could barely contain himself. It reminded me that I do like diving with other people, just not buddying with them. It was also quite gratifying to out-breathe my new found friend. I was on a single 12L at 220bar and he was on twin 12L at 160bar. He was gutted when he had to wave goodbye and head back to the boat.

Some photos from the day. Underwater photos are just GoPro screenshots, so don't judge me!
