Yes, it's "poor-boy" engineering, but it works! A magnet in a slide on the outside of the housing triggers the reed switch, which actuates a solenoid. The solenoid "punches" the record/stop button of the camera. Crude, but it does the job!
never thought about using dirt cheap magnetic reed switches inside a case. i just bought an old case (super8) that needs more controls. havn't bought a camcorder yet. hope to find one with a remote and use the pigtail with a gang of reeds and a bunch of cheap magnets.
