I stand corrected just with a typo. AKR has 3 daily dives on offer with the 4th dive being the night dive twice a week.

In re September and weather conditions:

Your better bet is the South side’s CCV environment. September is indeed within Caribbean Storm Season, and if (when) Roatan falls in the play of even a passing storm track heading North West towards Belize or Cozumel? The effect will curtail diving on the West and North coasts. AKR is on the North, even the shore environ becomes quite disagreeable. It may be a crap-shoot, but why not place a bet in your favor?

I've only stayed at CocoView Resort. Meals were buffet, so all you can eat, and good (I never felt constrained by meal time 'window' issues). Another poster in a past trip report was disappointed with portion sizes at Anthony's Key Resort. I'm a big eater, so hearing that turned me right off. I like the option to do a shore dive, though I admit the one at CCV is one you do from drop off dives coming back in anyway (ah, but you could do some night shore diving).

My Research Notes from planning a Roatan Trip - My Research Notes from Planning Roatan Trip

Your CCV report had the opposite effect on my wife as it did for me. I was ready to make a reservation and she reacted more like: "What?! Were going to be diving all day every day? I want to go do other stuff and see other stuff." I thought she knew the definition of a dive vacation. Back to the drawing board.

Now you know part of why a number of my dive trips are solo... :D

If you look at CocoView's website, they have a number of excursions you can do. I wouldn't go there if I weren't diving, but for supplemental activities, it could work.

CocoView Resort - Explore Roatan - Island Activities and Tours That list has a link to get prices.

From what I recall of @Doc posts in the past, you may not want to drive around in a rental vehicle on Roatan as the law can put you in a bind if you get in an accident. Roatan is not like Bonaire, a destination where divers are accustomed to renting a vehicle and driving themselves all over the place.

Now if her idea of a dive vacation/vacation-with-some-diving is 2 dives in the morning then the rest of the day doing other things every day, off grounds (as opposed to lying in a hammock, etc...) and she's going to inflict that on both of you, I've got to wonder if the West End might be a better choice (from what I've read).

If your wife wants to do anything other than diving CCV is not going to be your best option.

My wife is from The Netherlands. I always expected one of these days we would visit the ABC islands. Now we are looking at Curacao. We can do a two tank boat dive in the morning and have the afternoon to stroll through town, shop, eat, etc.

Our sentiment regarding "dive vacations" was similar. The diving part obviously underpins the whole reason for traveling to these types of destinations, but what is there to do when we are not diving (assuming you might want to do other things)? What's the topside experience like?

Personally, this carries equal weight whenever planning trips.

"...I've got to wonder if the West End might be a better choice (from what I've read)."

Just for clarification, West End (town), and West Bay (beach) are different places, but both are close to each other and both located on the western end of the island. This fact was not always clear in my mind until we got there. Regardless of where you choose to stay, both are well worth a visit.

Hope this is helpful!

Yes, Curacao can be very good for that.

Took me quite awhile, too, from reading reports. From what I understand, West Bay has the better beaches and is a more expensive place, whereas the West End is where more divers would probably actually stay. I see the occasional trip report based in West End, but I don't recall the last time I saw one based in West Bay.

Recent dive trips took me to Curacao in December 2021 and Roatan in May 2022. Curacao was a far superior experience for me. As a solo traveler/diver, I felt very safe in Curacao. Although I didn't leave Anthony's Key Resort during my stay in Roatan, I would not have ventured out alone at any time of the day. Honduras is going through a lot of political violence and unrest, and even though Roatan is not in the capitol, the ripple effect runs through all the islands' people, and they are desperate. I was getting daily alerts from the U.S. State Department about the protests and called AKR about it to see if I should cancel my trip, and she assured me that it would be safe to come.

Combined with the no-see-ums that are constantly gnawing at you, I just got room service.
Thanks for the heads up. I’m noseeum magnet. Got eaten up quite badly in Utila. I’ll be better prepared when I go to SB Invasion 2023 in AKR.
