A couple that I know took their 14 and 11 year old sons to Curaçao this past week. She texted me yesterday with news that her 11 year old tested positive on the return test, completely asymptomatic. Fortunately, the folks they are renting from at Marazul had no one coming in, so they could stay there through quarantine.

They decided to get a PCR test done at the airport yesterday, hoping it was a false positive. It came back today as positive, so no getting around it.

The interesting thing in all of this is that they were kind of left dangling in the wind by everyone. There was nothing on the test result stating what to do if there is a positive result, nor on any website that they could find. Now, stress level was pretty high, so they may have missed something. They got a call this afternoon from the health department (not sure if it was the Curaçao or US health department) on what to do.

So, here is the meat of it according to what they were told.

Anyone in the party with negative test results can go home. The person who is positive, and anyone else in the party who decides to stay with them, have to stay for 10 days. At the End of the 10 days they will be given a letter of release to come home. Anyone who stays with them must retest, and have a negative result, the day before the new departure date.

Also, even if you test negative before you return, you will be stopped at immigration. They will see the positive and the quarantine, so you need the letter.

In this case, the mom and the 14 year old flew back today. Dad is staying with the 11 year old. Bright side, they were told they could still snorkel all they want (non divers) and, as long as no one else is there, use the pool. So, could be worse.

This is the first person I know that has run into this, so I thought it might be helpful information. I’ll update with anything new that comes my way.

Thanks for the information. I was wondering what the situation is for a positive test. Does thus mean that if the father tests positive because he caught it from his son that the father would have to quarantine another ten days?

That’s my understanding. So he could be there for a long time.

So, if in that quarantine situation where you are NOT infected, it seems like you should test daily so you get the earliest possible alert of infection, so your quarantine period can start as soon as possible.

Oohhh, I like that! I’ll pass it along. I’m not sure how they’ll feel about the extra cost, though. But it’s worth considering.

Are these kits widely available in the US? How much are they?
They are readily available now. The sell for $7 and up. Finding one during big surges like this past January, though, is a different matter.
Studies show they are pretty accurate, but I know many people who got false positives. Maybe user error.

I still have 2 free test kit sent by US government (thanks to Biden) that I’m going to take them with me to wherever I travel abroad.

2 tests/kit. So, I can do 4 tests with 2 kits.

Don't forget, most of the selftest antigen kits can NOT be tele-proctored, so don't serve to get you back into the US. They are only good to let you know your status re infection.
