I left my NAUI certification card at a dive shop and they have not located it. Now I need a new card. Even though I know exactly when I received my certification (12/1989), where I was certified (Scubahaus in Santa Monica) and who my instructor was (Pete Kelly), as well as my ID #, the nice folks at NAUI say they can’t find a record of me! Can anyone suggest a way to resolve this. Seems strange that there is no record. Unfortunately, Scubahaus went out of business in 2018. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Email NAUI HQ: nauihq@naui.org.
Send ALL the info you have, did this for a diver I trained in 1992, he said it could not be found, another check here:
Verify Certification | NAUI Worldwide. Dive Safety Through Education found him.
Is Pete Kelly still around and do you know his Instructor #?
Thank you for responding. I have given NAUI all the information via the website, emailed it to them, AND spoken directly to the representative. Unfortunately, I do not know the Instructor #.

Can you or NAUI HQ locate the instructor by his name?

FYI Some of their paper records burned in a truck fire when they were moving their offices from CA to FL way back (before the records were entered into their computer system).

Fantastic to see an organisation with a comprehensive Privacy Notice, but it lacks one thing; how long personal information will be retained. If the OP lived in the E.U. they could submit a ‘subject access request’ for the information.

I am not sure that I understand you, can you clarify please?

The GDPR applies to any organisation worldwide that holds (processes) personal information on E.U. Citizens. One of the many requirements is to prevent information from being accidentally deleted. Without stating a retention period NAUI are required to hold personal information indefinitely. Therefore, the OP’s information should still be available.

I believe California, Australia, Canada, Israel, and others now have personal data protection laws with similar requirements.

I ran into a similar situation with NAUI about five years ago. I did not show up on the database either, but a NAUI employee took a personal interest in my case and had it resolved. See if you can find an actual human at NAUI with whom you can plead your case. Good luck.

the problem with this is that the records never existed digitally and the paper copies were destroyed in the accident described above.

@Globemama any chance you've ever taken a picture of your c-card or if a dive shop/charter would have scanned it at some point? If you have a copy of it then NAUI should be willing to reprint one. If you can figure out how to contact your instructor, then he can get with NAUI and verify it for a reprint.

You could always sign up for a new course that would "trump" your original card, I'd do something like NAUI Nitrox Diver and that would sort out your current conundrum. It's a 1-day course and gets you nitrox but since it's a "diver" course unlike most agencies that doesn't require any dives, it puts you back in NAUI's record systems with a diver card that can be used in lieu of the diver card. I don't actually have a NAUI Scuba Diver card, only the Nitrox Diver card... If you were on this coast I'd help sort you out in person, but without the records it's hard to do from afar.

The OP's record are paper records from 1987. These records were destroyed in a truck fire when NAUI was moving its offices from CA to FL. Nothing up until that point was stored electronically unfortunately.
