To me Peregrine sounds like an ideal backup for my Teric, I don't do tech diving.
Just placed the order, I can easily afford one so why not plus I really dig Shearwater's product quality.

That's how I'm using mine but mine is a backup to my Perdix AI. I believe you will be pleased with it.

divesoft makes a freedom computer which comes in gauge mode only. if you ever need to upgrade it to full trimix or ccr, you can. otherwise a cheap bottom timer is really all you need..

I was looking at the freedom computer. right now the liberty is my top choice for rebreather when I get one. I ended up getting a used Teric.

the freedom computers are great computers. Just keep in mind, i think the ones on the liberty are hard-wired so you may not be able to use yours as a controller for the liberty.

They are hard wired. The actual computer is in the rebreather head. The consoles are just displays. I thought about getting a freedom computer to get used to the interface but I really like shearwater products and like wireless transmitters.

The peregrine is a great backup even if you are planning technical down the road. The lack of trimix ability doesn't really have any bearing on its use as a backup computer. As long as you have the oxygen set correctly, it will get you out of the water.
If you have any plans, even an inkling that a rebreather is down the road, it is a waste of money. It doesn't do fixed setpoint and likely never will.

Hmmm.. and how does it work? My idea of “backup” is DC I can continue using for more days of diving while say on a liveaboard. A DC that knows my current tissue loading so I don’t need to stay out of water for 24/48 hrs and then grab a rental DC.

in that context. the bottom timer is used for technical dives. one thing taught in deco classes in to plan every dive out by hand using tables. using a Computer really is just a way to confirm your calculations are correct. you always dive with wetnotes or slate that have the dive profile written down to follow with the bottom timer if your main computer stops working.
