AI, compass, trimix. Which would you pay extra for?

Maybe they should adopt the Tesla model and include certain features that you have to pay extra to unlock.

I'd be most interested in a base Teric and would be happy to pay $100 to unlock the compass. I wouldn't pay for trimix or AI at this point, but who knows what the future will bring?
Excellent idea....

I suppose I need to get with the times then and stop penny pinching.¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Or maybe make friends with someone who will gift me dive gear. If anything, a wrist comp does inspire people to look at the comp more often, which is never a bad thing. I just see a console option selling relatively well to new divers.
I find my wrist computer easier to use than pushing buttons to turn on the electronic.

Excellent idea....
thanks for that reply. your thoughts were the same as mine. I was wondering other than the case why not sell a petrel with just a different firmware version in it that does not have the full range of features. seems like that would have been a very quick deployment of a non tech computer. Likewise I dont know what is stopping shearwater in the future from just making a firmware version to add tech to the new computer. maybe this is a text platform for the charger

I believe they are marketing this computer to people who are not in tech diving but will dive nitrox. Furthermore, its more for the purely recreational diver who wants a safe, reliable and easy to operate computer. On that notion, they hit the bullseye. Forget it having tech features. It was not designed for that population.

Expect an AI model in a year.
who it was designed for may be moot. It may be valid for a marketing point, only but It really is not anything new. basically same as a petrel 1 with non tech firmware and a charger. Im trying to figure out what is new in this other than non tech at half the price. if they can do the algorythm thing by paying 60 bucks to get a key to using that , then why not just make computers that you get a platform and buy the license's you want instead of a complete different platform.

OK, this is cool. Their little square charger can be used for not only for the Peregrine, but also the (P)Teric, and my phone. I like that.

The Noid light is red when not charging something.

The noid light turns green while charging.
There's also a nice alert when it's done.

How accurately does it have to be aligned on the charger and how much tolerance for misplacement or movement is there?

I as this simply because, 90% of my diving is on liveaboards. Obviously horizontal space is limited and a concern is if someone accidently knocks the computer it stops charging - leaving you disappointed in the morning (having confirmed to yourself when you put the computer on the pad it was charging)

Genuine question, while its not a computer for me, there are a few of my friends diving old Galileo, or UWTEC comps, that don't' give a hoot about AI or compass but would probably jump at this especially seeing how slim it is

New model is a "less extreme duty" case (not as deep of a depth rating) which is cheaper to manufacture. So the question is, do you need the depth rating?
I dont think depth rating is a realistic factor at all. they already have a proven case with the petrel and perdix. teh R and D has to be expensive for new hardware. I see it as a sex appeal factor for marketing. and perhaps this case is a test item for future plans to put tech brains to be put in this same case. Or tech brains for tec use up to say 200 ft.

You are right it is just a new case, trimmed features and cheaper. But with the same gas loading information. Nothing to see here. Move along.:):):)

If you were buying your first dive comp and do not do deep tech, which would you want to strap to your wrist?

makes no difference to me I guess. the tiny platform may be of interest to most but not to me. I equate size to damage resistance. comparing them by a DS diver there is not that much size difference. They could have used the same brick box and sold it half the cost with its own firmware. the buttons look very small for glove use so perhaps this is a warm water computer also????? not only the size of the button but that a thin case tends to settle into the wet suit so you have to really work to get not only access to the buttons but then operate them. the small platform does not appeal to me at all. I do see it as perhaps a step to making this new platform console mountable. no tech mode ,,,, no tech considerations in its design.

Gotcha. Thanks. I was looking under the Decompression and Gradient factors section on page 25.

Having the ability to input a custom GF really sets it apart from the rest of the rec-focused dive computers out there.
Yes and I think this will be the first low price computer that will have GF info available for the rec divers. After all what is the difference inthe tech mode trimix. and of course RB support. I would be happy if SW would market puters such that you have to buy a license to access RB stuff when you dont have a fisher port. not having the RB support makes rec and tech basically the same thing. so we are still at only a firmware difference other than the case. the implementatin of gf access to the diving community at a 500 dollar price may just change how ascents are formally done and them being probably the onlyones to have gf at that price may generate a lot of sales. As it is I will never buy a puter with out GF info. now take PADI if they start teaching about GF's, sales will go through the roof for shearwater. I would bet the price is the only thing stopping many buyers form getting them. That could have been tested by shearwater by making a petrel with out the tech firmware for the 500 price. the sales appeal would have been a no cost / redesign effort.

Imagine if 1/4th of hte active rec divers bought these and they learn GF's. what would that do to the market as far as other computers that do not have GF info on it. This could make buhlman the standard for rec computers. Especially when the day comes that it is so common agencies start to teach it.
