Howdy. Currently using a BARE 7mm Sport S-Flex and will get another, but a 5mm. Current weight belt is 20 lbs. How much weight might I ditch?

5-6 lb for suit.
Are you ditching a hood as well? Changing thickness of an existing hood? Maybe another 0.25-1#.

I use 12, 14, 16 pound weights for 3, 5, 7 mm wetsuits. So I add a pound weight for a mm thicker wetsuit.

for me, 4 lb - but you'll need to experiment given the range of answers. Maybe start with 2 lb, as the worst is that you will be slightly overweighted.

Not much, maybe 2 pounds.
Thank you, I kinda thought the same.

Newp, keeping the hooded vest. I chatted with the nice folks at Kona Diving Co. and learned that the instructors there wear 7mm suits and use hoods. In the interest of preserving suitcase space, having better freedom-of-movement while wearing it, and having a (somewhat) lighter weight-belt, I think a 5mm would be a better choice.

Agreed, I'd rather be slightly overweighted.

Depends a lot on how old and compressed the 7 mm is versus a brand new 5 mm. Start w/ 2 lbs as first shot.
Thank you, it's a new 7mm. Just got back into diving after a 16 year hiatus. I will start with two pounds.
