This publication is from the Navy, it's comprehensive (so the document itself could be considered very advanced).

But it's safety summary beginning after the legalese portions, pages iii through vii were so interesting to me I think any diver should at least read them to get an idea of a baseline of safety. So enjoy:

I was particularly fascinated, that in the fire service you are encouraged (though maybe not rightly so) to skip-breathe, but in Navy Diving you are explicitly prohibited from doing so. Pursuing the answer lead to another BASIC piece of info not well taught in PADI certification:

Hypercapnia - Wikipedia

Hypercapnia, in terms of Diving, Divers do not "BREATHE ENOUGH". And there is a physiological reason for this especially above 4ATM or ~100 fsw. Read that section for interesting information on breathing at depth.
