This is terrible to listen to.... :(

My condolences to all families involved....

Damn, I've listen to black box recording of air crashes and these gives me the same stomach churning dread.

unlike most scuba accidents the truth will come out in this case , ntsb are pros

Pics of Conception dive boat I took in 2006. In terms of the sleeping area below, I remember that you couldn't close the curtains because it got so damned stuffy down there. Yes, they had ventilation into the hallway, but not into individual bunks. Someone warned me about that, so I brought a battery-operated fan, but still, very stuffy if I closed the curtains. And still somewhat stuffy with them open. Never went back to that boat for that reason, started diving the Horizon out of San Diego instead.

Looks like Worldwide Diving Adventures had the boat booked for the weekend, according to their website. One their family members also posted on Twitter, that they were on board.

Confirmed charter was out of Winters, California which is very close to Sacramento. That is a very tiny town, more than likely had people from Sacramento on the trip, since they would often provide transportation to Santa Barbara - like a bus. I dove the Conception with Dolpin Scuba out of Sacramento, and that is how we went. They also booked a trip out on September 29 of this year on the Conception. God, I hope the guy I just sold my tanks to did not go on this trip. He and his wife were getting ready to go on some local diving trip and they needed tanks. Sold them just two weeks ago.

I do not think that in this case speculation is inherently disrespectful to the victims. Most of the cases here involve individual divers and the threads can take a victim-blaming tone as people speculate whether the diver panicked, ignored training, and so on. Those threads can indeed be disrespectful towards the victims and hurtful for their loved ones when they come across them. In this case however nobody is doing anything close to victim blaming (aside from the "sardine can" comment).

This tragic incident is likely to be a game change event for liveaboards in the United States. The outcome of the NTSB investigation will likely result in recommendations that will impact non-liveaboard operators as well. I hope that a respectful discussion about boating safety, fire avoidance, fire fighting, evacuation, etc will be tolerated as this forum is the main forum English speaking divers have on which to discuss the incident and its implications.

It appears the audio is half duplex but the part where the Coast Guard is asking the boat crew if they can get back to unlock the door to allow the passengers out....

Perhaps the part about “theories” should be removed because it is a segue to and fascilitates speculation?

The point of this forum is not necessarily to definitively determine the cause of an accident. The purpose is also to have a meeting place to discuss in a measured and thoughtful way how an accident *may* have occurred. People can and should speculate on the cause, so long as the logic is reasonable and productive. It causes people to use critical thinking skills and consider angles they may not have thought of before. I have to say that personally, this forum has been the *single* greatest learning tool for my own dive safety and development, precisely because of the speculation in it.
