That is not even close to being true.

First off we do not know if the computer software used has converted his azimuth from grid to magnetic.

Meaning without correction, AND being 20 degrees off azimuth he is looking at being 27 total degrees off azimuth worst case, and 13 degrees off azimuth best case.

If he is traveling 1Km,13 degrees would put him 234m off his intended target grid and 486m off at 27 degrees.

first here in Italy variation is very small almost negligible (from a few prime to a whole degree east).
To convert from true north to magnetic north use the east is least west is best (subtract east variation from true and add west).
To calculate how much you would be off you can use the 1:60 rule. For each degree every 60 lenght of distance you are off by one for each degree:
600 meters, 1 degree 10 meter off. Just a few quick items for mental navigation.

My first thought was why you didn't just ascend along the shot line, especially with a boat waiting for you. If necessary, you could always scooter at the end of the dive toward shore.

By the time we separated we already had scootered 10 minutes .... so the shotline was long gone ....
 
Seems like a failure on the part of your buddy. Granted I don't scooter dive, but I'm always keeping track of where my buddy is. Doesn't seem like it should be different on a scooter.

It is vastly different on a scooter. If viz is 50 feet it only takes seconds for the team to be separated far beyond visible range.

One thing that has worked is to put a strobe on the back of the diver leading. It increases the range at which visual contact can be kept.

I have a newbie question: can’t you scooter while using a spool if you lock it with the double ender ? Is it too flimsy when you’ll pick up speed ?

You can. Sometimes the drag makes it tough to hold on to though.

I have two questions: what is the metal bar across the divers butt d ring?
And what temperature is the water there at 60m?

The bar is a seat for long distance scootering in order to relieve pressure from between your legs ... and move it on your butt.
Water at 60 is about 16, used to be 14 but the Med is warming up, unfortunately for the ecosystem.
