I know, and thats a bad thing in my mind.

In some things they have worked it out, like in bicyckle shoes and ski bindings, but it tock a couple of decades to do so.

How about cross-country ski bindings and snowboard bindings. Have they standardized? Just asking because they weren't not long ago (and I'm just curious - not trying to make a point).

Cross country and back country ski bindings have gone from many very similar to a few.

There are different kinds, of different ages and for different usage. Simplified you can say that there are the Nordic Norm family, and there are Salomons proprietary systems.

Back in the sixties and seventies there where a lot of different, non compatible systems built on the same principles.

Today, the difference in interface inside one family is usualy either compatible or designed for a different usage.

Thanks for the info. Back when I still had the legs for it I had to buy specific shoes to fit the bindings on my X-country skis. After a few years the boots blew out and it was nearly impossible to find shoes.

Oh, and sorry for the thread hijack - my bad.

This reminds me of the US Divers Caravelle Fins from the 50s and 60s, which had a detachable blade system and the foot pocket could be used as a shoe. More on those fins on Alec Pierce Vintage Scuba video on youtube.
