We are thinking about a trip to turks and caicos to dive. How is the diving there? Looking for top notch diving with things to do topside. TCI meets all of our requirements (location, water temp, etc) but unless the diving is great, I will continue my search for our next dive destination. Thanks

Where else have you been diving? Turks and Caicos is known as a good dive destination in the Caribbean, but you need to define "great diving." Different people prefer different things and have different things to compare to. For example T&C is known for pretty common shark sightings, which is great unless you don't like sharks. Provo is known for longish dayboat rides if heading someplace like West Caicos, which is generally considered better than the diving available closer to Provo. Fine if you like being on a boat, maybe not as good if you don't like long boat rides, or have non-divers waiting for you to get back to do stuff in the afternoon. Also, your average depth someplace like West Caicos tends to be deeper because the wall starts deep - again fine for some, but maybe not a heavy air user, or someone who just likes to spend lots of time in the shallows. They might prefer doing some of the diving around Grace Bay in Provo, or maybe Grand Turk.

Also need to define "things to do topside" - that means different things to different people. I haven't been there in a long time, but I don't recall a lot to do there beside eat, shop, hit the beach, and other water activities, and I don't know that has changed. Are you looking at Provo, or one of the other islands like Grand Turk? There's even less to do on GT.

Great points. Thanks. Examples of places we have been to that we enjoyed Palau, Hawaii, Bonaire, Cozumel, Belize. I don't mind a boat rides (do not love to live on them) and I do like sharks. I am looking for abundant sea life with healthy reefs. Best to say I am looking at bucket list diving.

I went via the Turks & Caicos Aggressor II late April 2018, and did some research into the destination beforehand. Here are my trip report & notes:

Turks & Caicos Aggressor II Report Apr. 2018 - Turks & Caicos Aggressor II 4/21-4/28 Trip Report

Others' input:

My hasty T&C Aggressor trip report May 12-19 2018 (by Darook).

So, it's my understanding you're likely looking at long boat rides land-based, or going live-aboard for the best dive experience but then you lose the topside you mentioned.

Have you been to Grand Cayman? It sounds more like what you're looking for to me.

Richard.

We saw lots of sharks and turtles while shore diving too. I love Turks & Caicos. Running (from mosquitoes) is a very popular topside activity when not diving. Some of the prettiest secluded beaches, nice restaurants, great diving, good times!

If you're looking for a week long vacation, you might get a little bored topside. There's stuff to do, but I'm not sure it would fill more than four or five days. A car rental is a must. Just remember they drive on the opposite side of the road from the US (which means the blinker lever is next to the driver's window). I would recommend diving with Aqua TCI. Their boat is smaller than Dive Provo and a little more intimate. I also seem to remember you can dive your air and not a time limit.

Also know that hotels on T&C can be very pricey.

We claim that T&C provides top notch Caribbean diving since most of our dive trips over the last 15 years have focused on T&C LOB, Bonaire and Belize LOB.

T&C "shallows" is a bit deeper for the most part. Thunderdome off Northwest point is very shallow with the sand around 40ish feetish. Most other sites have the sand at 50 or deeper. This "deep shallows" means you can not spend the last half of your dive above 30 feet.

I have been to TCI 3 times. The first time was shore based in Provo. The second was a LOB (Turks & Caicos Explorer II) and the third was a shore based in Grand Turk.

The three trips were very different. For the one where we stayed in Provo, we stayed at the Best Western (now it is called the Ports of Call) and dove with Dive Provo. This is a very convenient setup since they share the same parking lot. It is quite literally a matter of walking next door after breakfast. The draw-back, however, is as others have mentioned that the boat rides are 45 minutes give or take a little. The diving tends to be wall dives with the crest of the wall starting at about 45-60 feet. It does tend to be fairly "sharky" with Caribbean Reef Sharks and Nurse Sharks often coming over to say "Hi". Dive Provo is a class act, and I can recommend them without hesitation. (Count on 2 dives per day.)

Provo has a reputation which is much deserved for being expensive. There are ways to mitigate this. There is a grocery store about a 5 minute walk from Ports of Call with an amazing deli that has everything from pasta and pizza to sandwiches and salads.

The Turks & Caicos Explorer II (TCEx2) went to many of the same dive sights that we did with Dive Provo, but instead of a 45 minute boat ride, you simply step off the back of the boat. They might go a little farther from Provo, but not too much. (Count on 4 dives per day, 5 if you do the night dives.)

The third trip was to Grand Turk, and I stayed at a resort called Bohio. The diving in Grand Turk is similar to that near Provo, in that it is all wall diving. The big difference is that the dive sites are so close that you are already in your wetsuit before you get on the boat. Rides were typically less than 10 minutes (often less than 5 minutes). After the first dive, we would come back to the Bohio to place our lunch order during our surface interval. After the second dive, let the wait staff know you are back, go to your room & shower and get dressed and when you get back to the restaurant, your lunch order will be ready for you. (Count on 2 dives per day.) I personally had a lot of fun at Bohio and would go back tomorrow, but if you are looking for nightlife, it may not be a good fit for you. There is a huge difference between the nightlife in Grand Turk and in Vegas. :rofl3:

One thing to keep in mind is the time of year that you go. If you happen to go in the spring (both of my shore based trips took place in March) the Humpback whales are migrating through the area. You will likely hear them on most dives if the timing is right.

OK, what to expect on the dives. First of all, from the folks that I have talked to, the two hurricanes that hit TCI last fall did a number on their infrastructure, but the dive sites are deep enough that there was virtually no damage to the dive sites.

The dive sites tend to be walls. Sheer drop off, pure vertical walls. Walls that drop off to the abyss (keep an eye on your depth). The coral was good and the reef life was abundant. Sharks are common and friendly, but not aggressive. There were a lot of turtles in Grand Turk. It was unusual if we didn't see at least one per dive, and sometimes 5 or more were seen. Lionfish were present, but no where near what is expected in the Bahamas, and they haven't wiped out the other species.

Personally, I really liked the TCI.
