After using my drysuit for the first time recovering a vehicle a couple weeks ago, I realized we will absolutely need weight harnesses instead of weight belts. The extra weight I needed coupled with the slick hazmat drysuit and my lack of pronounced hips made for some slapstick comedy as the belt kept trying to slide down my body once I got wet.

Dive Rescue International carries an insanely expensive $350 weight harness and a more reasonably priced $124 DUI harness. The expensive one doubles as a comm line harness, while the DUI will necessitate a second harness to hook up the comm line. What other options do we have that will do the job of removable weights and act as a comm harness yet are reasonably priced?

Are there no replies because nobody uses weight harnesses or because it's a stupid question? One thing I've learned about internet forums over the years is that people love to give opinions on everything even if they have no experience on the subject. :eyebrow:

It's normal weight belt with the harness.. they cost around $60-$80 .. there's dozen of them, not sure why you're considering a $350 one.... random one (Europe.. but it gives you the idea):

I'm not wanting to pay $350 for one. However, I want one that doubles as a tether/comm attachment harness, which the $350 one does. If I were diving recreationally, I would be wearing a different type of drysuit and pretty much any weight harness would do fine.

We use a separate harness for the tether and one for weight. Most of our guys use the original DUI harness, it uses regular 2” web, the newer DUI has thinner straps.

We were talking about adapting an ice harness or commercial harness to do both but haven’t tried anything out.

The big thing I don't like about the DUI harness is having to rethread the monofilament line every time you pull the weights. This keeps you from practicing ditching and from removing and handing up weights when you exit the water. I've been eyeing the Team LGS (Lifeguard Systems) harness for the last day or two. It's expensive but looks really good. The D-ring for connecting the tether/comm is off to one side, but that's about the only bad thing I see with it. LGS seems to make decent equipment but the pictures on their website are horrible!

Hi, tbzep -- why don't you give me a call at your convenience? (619) 236-1203, x326. I'm there 8 AM - 5 PM PST, M-F. I'm Ryan, the public safety manager for DUI. Let's try to figure a solution for the com-rope attachment and I also want to tell you about our new weight system coming out that you *DO NOT HAVE TO THREAD* -- I think you may be interested!

When is the new weight system coming out? We need a solution now, not months from now.

Well, I'm afraid we still have some time before it will hit the street, as we are fine-tuning the release mechanism.
