I've heard the "thousands more people die in car crashes than in planes every year" before, but I didn't know if they take into consideration the fact that there are hundreds of thousands more cars in the world, plus there is a lot more air space than land, so airplanes have a much lower chance of collision or crash.

Anyways, I guess I just kind of got spooked - when looking for scuba books and movies, 95% of what comes up is stories of people dying. I guess that's all people who don't dive care about. :p I just keep imagining inhaling and instead of getting air through the regulator, getting a lungful of water. :/

Thanks guys! I can't wait to start! :D

Where are you at in the PNW?

The regulators are designed with intermediate pressure higher than water pressure... it means it's one way. Water can't go into the reg for u to breath.

Just my two cents here but if you don't feel comfortable with something or if your gut says no don't do it and don't do anything unless your 100 percent certain you can handle it

Which, I assume, doesn't mean "don't get into SCUBA" but rather be conservative when diving. Always...ALWAYS...be willing to not dive, or abort a dive, for whatever reason. Diving within your skills and comfort zone is important. Things will happen & you need to be able to deal with them calmly so minor things don't escalate.

To me...diving is not an adventure sport, it's a very wet and peaceful walk in the (kelp) forest. :D

Yeah, definitely going to try it out as soon as I get the chance, but not going to push it to the limits or do something that I don't feel comfortable with. :)

Anyways, I wish I lived near a natural warm ocean, but the closest ocean is the Pacific which is very cold around my end of the earth. :p We do have plenty of lakes and rivers that can get warmish in the summer, though. Next summer I plan to get my scuba friends to go snorkeling with me and see what old fishing rods we can scrounge up from the bottom of one of the local lakes. :p

Yes, there will definitely be a lot of fishing line. I've been researching line cutters/similar things.

Any blade is better than no blade at all.
One, or more well placed, where you can reach it with either hand is a good idea.
Although in all my diving I have never had a serious entanglement, it is wise to be prepared.
