I have not tried a hard Goodman handle. Looking at them, it seems like you'd have to hold it all the time. If you opened your hand, it looks like the light would potentially fall off your hand or at least wobble around and be annoying as you use your hand to do something else.

How does it really work?

Do you adjust it so that it is snug-to-not-quite-tight when you slip your hand into it, and that keeps it stable even when you open your hand? I feel like my hand tapers towards my fingers, so a hard handle would have to be uncomfortably tight to not slide forward (towards my fingers) if I opened my hand while I happened to have my hand pointing down.

Does that mean you have to readjust it every time you change to a different kind of glove?

Yeah, you adjust it so that it's comfortable but snug enough so that it doesn't fall off easily. Have used mine with dry gloves, 5 mm gloves, 3 mm gloves, and barehanded. No problem. And the hard handle is much easier to don and doff during a dive than the soft handles I have used.

I have a Halcyon focus, with their version of the handle.

More or less with large thickness differences between gloves you would have to readjust the Goodman Handle.

Ideally you would set the height so that with a slightly bent hand, your tendons would pump out and hold the Goodman handle in place.
Closing your hand fully and squeezing hard, you shouldn't feel any tight pain as your hand flexes to fill the handle.
Personal preference on how tight you want to make it.

Additionally you can also offset the handle, so it sits diagonally across your palm. Pinky side, the handle will sit farther back than on Index Finger side. This helps keep it in place better on a small hand, helps with your stretch hand stability question, and prevents it from quickly sliding off if you stretch out your hand slightly.

Basically, you want a compromise between coming off too easily, and being hard to remove when necessary. It doesn't really go over your fingers, it goes around your palm. And you really don't have to hold, it - mine fits comfortably, but it's very easy to remove when necessary.

If you using classic GH then : it is important that the lower handle is adjustable from a flat profile and not round profile. It must also be wide enough -cca 25 mm and thick enough about 4mm ;

It is also important the width of GH - should not be too broad; the width of your palm + 5mm for gloves .

AND......... lighthead should not be placed to high above GH platform , lighthead have some weight and to high displacement made handle which cause torque .... more simple that means pains in rest hitch at longer dive and also help to GH flips over forward through fingers.

your comments are correct, I really don't like them.... The UWLD soft goodmans are brilliant and actually include a small bungee that goes around your wrist to prevent chatter when in high current or on a scooter...

I do not like the hard handles - they cause pressure sores on top of my hand if I am diving a lot. I love the soft handles, though.

I use the diverite "soft" handle. It's not really all that soft, but much softer than a square piece of metal. It does a good job of staying put, being comfortable, and not being in my way at all. It's firm enough that the light does not flop around at all like you get with some soft handles. The downside is cost. I am pretty sure I paid $100 for the thing.

It works fine with non diverite lights. I'm using it with an edge morph 1000 "can" style light. The light head attaches to the QRM block with a zip tie (or whatever you want to use). It also makes for a great place to attach surgical tubing for storing line arrows and cookies.

I can't see where UWLD sells those except as part of a full can light system?

Even if you get the soft GH itself, can you use it with other brands of lights?

I used a Light & Motion Sola dive light on a couple of cenote dives last year. I thought the soft handle for that was ideal. Very comfortable around my hand with an adjustable webbing strap to go around the base of my hand/wrist to keep it totally secure. Anybody know if one of those could be purchased separately and used with other lights?

Soft handles/socks:

Ihave a number of ones I use/like

OxyCheq Universal, OxyCheq (specific version), some other models, ....

I have a couple universal hard handles made here by a guy as a project a few years ago, but never implemented them as I like the soft handles
