Dived in the Keys with bananas on the boat all the time. Maybe that was why there were always sharks under the boat...but wait, that's a good thing!! :D

Just remember this....

Pee in your wetsuit and no one cares.

Pee INTO your wetsuit and everyone loses their mind!!!

Hello,

If there is already a thread about this, please forgive me and please let me know the link.

I'd like to know from the more seasoned divers which are the most common etiquette mistakes newbies make

I saw at least 4 people today forgetting to bungee their tanks. I mean, is that really such a hard thing to remember?! Come on!...And...this is AFTER the captain yelled "Don't forget to bungee your tanks!". I'm not a "seasoned diver" but I can remember to bungee my tank, ha!

Bananas are considered to be bad luck on boats as they can cause other fruit and vegetables to go off. Thus when fruit was being transported by boats, a mixed cargo which included bananas could end up totally ruined, leading to no money. If you want to ripen fruit that is nowhere near ripe, put it in a paper bag with a banana and see what happens.

I read that fruits release ethylene gas that causes the ripening. Bananas must release more ethylene. Found it on the interweb, so it must be true.

This is why bananas are considered bad luck on boats, and on fishing boats, captains are a bunch of superstitious folks, so any superstition they hear (My mother and grandmother were not allowed on my uncles commercial fishing boat for years unless they would proclaim that they were not in "that time of the month", which neither would do) becomes the lay of the sea. I will still never use blue bottom paint. I welcome bananas.

As far as boat etiquette goes, there are whole books written....

I am a french speaking seasonned sailor and I have never heard about bananas bringing bad luck. The only banned word/animal/food relates to "rabbit" ;)

I do not keep a record, but there are some mistakes (that I have done too) that are better left undone,

Do not lie about your fears. If you feel uncertain, then tell it. We do the same. At least I do. I have a fear of (down) currents at sea and propeller currents.

Also, try to avoid surprises. Give the out-of-air sign or show the SPG before you have completely ran out of air. Thumb the dive when you feel unpleasant, not two seconds before panic. There are more options available to us when an early warning is issued.

An example: I was diving with a dive buddy. It was a mentally unexpectedly difficult dive and I did a few mistakes. One of those was that I was ashamed of my low-on-air situation and I thought that it would be inappropriate to give an out-of-air sign while I still had overpressure in the cylinder. Guess what... it was not appreciated when I suddenly showed an "0" SPG to my buddy. He would have liked to know earlier.

A banana on a dive boat isnt going to summons the Kraken or foul the prop...but...Mariners are superstitious. I crew on tall ships, Bananas wont summon the Kraken or turn our rigging into writhing pit vipers, but we enjoy refusing people passage if they are found to have a banana in their possession ;) but this superstition has scientific reasons instead of just being a good story to tell and say Aaarghhhh a lot..which most serious mariners would rather be attacked with a broad-axe than say anyway.

Theres so many of these superstition. Dont whistle on a boat either, you are whistling up a storm. There is absolutely no factual basis for this one at all.

Etiquette - as a new diver the person on the boat who has dived the best spots in the world and saw not one whaleshark but 54 while being buzzed by oceanic whitetips in a raging downcurrent in a far off exotic destinatios is fascinating. Inspiring also perhaps, who wouldn't want those amazing experiences? He/She is also the person you nod your head and smile at every few minutes but in 5 years he/she will likely to be telling another you the same stories. That person is really after a pissing contest which should not ever be the reason for diving. Smile and nod...
