My wife and I stayed at Villa Aldora from July 5-13, 2015 and made 15 dives with Aldora Diving. First, the Villa.
Upon arrival from the airport we were greeted by Brent, the caretaker of V.A. He was very warm and welcoming. We received a room upgrade without asking, he had beer and wine available if we wanted and once we were settled in our room, he drove us to the supermarket so we could stock up on supplies. He had all of the paper work ready for our diving so we did not need to visit the dive shop. Throughout our visit, Brent had our back. He made numerous suggestions about where to eat, what to see, etc. and is advice was 100% accurate. On our last day (non-diving) he gave us use of a vehicle to tour the island. Later that day he also escorted us to the northern part where we feed a close relative of the raccoon. These animals were wild and in the natural setting, but were very tame and very cute. The rooms were very clean and everything worked as it should. The master bed was extremely comfortable, somewhere between firm and soft. We slept very well. The common areas are up kept and clean. A natural salt water pool is available and bicycles are available for use. A terrier named Murphy is commonly seen around, following Brent and is very friendly. I highly recommend Villa Aldora and will definitely stay there again if we visit Cozumel.

The boat picked us up every day at the Villa with our gear already on the boat and ready to go. A.D. uses steel 120s so you get a loner bottom time. They also supply Nitrox (32%, 36%) if wanted. We got Nitrox certified with them and are well worth it when diving with them; 75 minute bottom times were common compared to my usual 50 minutes. All the dive masters were very willing to go where ever we asked, conditions pending of course. A.D. uses smaller boats and we never dove with more than 4 other divers + the DM. All DMs seemed very passionate about the wildlife and reefs. A special mention to Dario, who went above and beyond making sure we saw whatever we wanted, and took very good care of us. He grew up on Cozumel and is vested in its good health.
A.D. has what it calls an adventure dive that visits the northern waters. The dive sites are about 6 nautical miles north of the island and are open water dives. You must be nitrox certified to go on the 3 dive trip. It is billed as a trip to the sleeping shark caves, although Mother Nature did not comply and we saw no sharks. What we did see was a different Cozumel. Being in the open water, the fauna was different and the reef landscape changed from the preserve in the south. Lionfish hunting is encouraged everywhere and they are in plentiful supply at these sites. Both my wife and I speared our first lionfish on these dives. One surface interval is on the boat, the other is back on the mainland where you are taken to visit an old Mayan structure described as an ancient light house of sorts. You are also served a fresh ceviche made from fresh lionfish, lobster, snapper, and conch.
Aldora Divers is a very good operation and on par with most of my other diving experiences elsewhere. I would recommend them because of their service, steel 120s and they are the only place that will dive in the north as well on the east side (conditions permitting).

...and once we were settled in our room, he drove us to the supermarket so we could stock up on supplies.

That's good service! I've wondered about maybe staying there someday, but it sounded like it was aways from food, and driving in a foreign place I'm unfamiliar with is off-putting. Were you walking distance from good restaurants? I'm no gourmet.

Richard.

I think that it took me about twenty minutes to walk from Villa Aldora to the ferry. There are also taxis.

When we stayed there, we walked into town every night for dinner. It's an easy 15 minutes or so on flat ground, and it was good to walk a bit of dinner off . . . :). The only reason to need a vehicle is to transport groceries, if you are going to buy a lot, or heavy stuff.

We were delighted with Aldora. They were recommended by someone here on SB, and we were not disappointed.

Was in Cozumel last week, stayed at El Cantil this time. Dove most every day with Aldora. Couldn't agree more that Dave and Memo's service is THE BEST!!

Nice!

I've been diving with Aldora for years, and they have always been awesome. I was there the last two weeks in May this year and Aldora totally rocked it again; probably the best Coz trip I've had to date. Got in the Adventure dives and Polar Express stuff up north, plus the northern shallows too (awesome), and also several great dives down past Maracaibo as well. One of my favorite dives this trip was my last one at San Juan; just spectacular that day (thanks Liang!).

The Villa is a great place to stay, and the staff are excellent. That said, I usually stay in town at Casa Mexicana to be more central to the things I like to do topside (restaurants, bars, groceries, shopping, taxis, people, etc), plus the rooms great, reasonably priced, have a breakfast buffet included, and they are a block from the Aldora shop and two blocks from the Aldora pier. The only downside is maybe that there really isn't much of a beach in that area, but I get plenty of beach action everyday at the surface interval anyway, so not really that big of a deal for me personally.

Once you stay at the Villa, you will not want to stay anywhere else. Brent and Debbie are the best!

As others have said, my experience at the Villa Aldora is always the best. Its location is ready a plus to me. It’s quiet , the boat picks you up 20ft from your room, you can dive and snorkel in front of the Villa too. You can walk to town in about 15 minutes (which we do a lot) or Aldora has negotiated rates with the cab company. Plus, if you let the folks at the Villa know you want or need a ride and they happen to be heading to town, they will let you ride with them. We have never rented a car and I doubt I ever will. I have used the bikes they have for quick runs to the store for Sol. :)

Only been to Cozumel on cruise ships. Found Aldora several years ago. Only get to do one two tank trip each visit. They have been great every time. If I get to do a week in Cozumel it will be with Aldora

My wife and I decided to give Aldora a try on our last visit to Coz instead of the other couple of well-regarded ops we had been using (and were satisfied with). I have to agree Aldora is top-notch. Two comments to add:

Not to start a debate, but one should not underestimate how cumbersome a steel 120 can be out of the water. They are heavy. If you're small in stature and/or not accustomed to using a steel tank, it can feel anywhere from odd to downright painful. Sometimes after donning my rig there would be a wait of maybe 10 or more minutes before we could roll into the water, and I found myself crouched awkwardly against the rail, my back beginning to hurt. Although I'm a fit guy, I'm only 5'8" tall. It's really too long a tank for me. On the exit, I exercised my machismo in declining to doff my rig in the water and hand it up before climbing up the ladder, and so I found the climb difficult, especially the final step into the boat which required a maneuver over the rail. I think the repeated ladder climbs may have contributed to a bout of sciatica I suffered beginning the last day of the trip. For all the advantages of a steel tank, there is still something positive (no pun intended) to be said about the good ol' aluminum 80. However, in all fairness, I believe Aldora offers steel 100s as an option. Maybe next time.

Also, we figured we could save a little money as well as be right there next to Aldora's pier in town by staying at Suites Bahia instead of Villa Aldora. It proved to be a false savings. Had we stayed at the Villa, I suspect the walk into town for dinner would have seemed like nothing to us. Any advantage of being close to Aldora's pier was offset by having to walk 10 minutes to breakfast at Suites Bahia's sister property, Casa Mexicana, and then 10 mins. back to Suites Bahia, grab our wetsuits (which had to be hung in our room), etc., and then trot over to the pier. Next time, it will be Villa Aldora for us.

For the record, Aldora does offer Steel 100s (lighter than Alum 80s) and tiny Steel 80s. Also, we never ask anyone to climb the ladder with their gear on…its also tough on the ladders!Dave DillehayAldora Divers
