Yesterday I saw where a company (LEEF) has built a device that will allow a direct USB connection to Apple devices. Wonder if this will open up the possibility for a direct connection between my dive computer and my iPhone?

Leef iBRIDGE Mobile Memory

No. It doesn't add USB OTG capability to ios devices. This is a variation of Apple's own camera connection kit.

What dive computer do you have?

Getting the Oceanic Pro Plus 3

Then you might consider getting a DCbuddy - Pelagic V so you can direct download logs from the PP3 into your iPhone/iPad
