In terms of being able to communicate quickly and effectively underwater, the best slate I have ever used (that may still be current) is the Global glossy slate with a China Marker pen. But the China Marker rusts out pretty and the shiny slate itsefl is fragile. So I put up with WetNotes style slates now. I wonder if the pages of tthat expensive WetNotes DiveGearExpress used to sell, really do not stick together underwater because that would be cool, and make WetNotes far less annoying.

We carry the flip-up wrist slates on every dive and use them frequently, everything from fish spotting to notes to alerts that another diver has a splitting headache but hasn't told the DM.

On the erasing thing.. Saw some "slate erasers" at the LDS. Looked an awful lot like the "Mr Clean" magic erasers. Will be trying this when I return home.

I wasted money on a flat, dangly slate and now it sits in the bottom of my gear box unused. Maybe did one dive with it.

+1 for the wrist slate. I use mine occasionally but take it on every dive.

Pros: It stays out of the way, doesn't dangle, and is there when you need it. Has enough space for any conversation you would realistically want to have underwater.

Cons: Doesn't leave much room on that forearm for other equipment (eg compass). The bit that holds the pencil in place is fragile and tends to break, but this can be solved by just tucking the pencil in between slate and wrist.

For $6 you can't go wrong.

That sounds about right. I hear magic erasers work great, but the white staedtler erasers that t4e suggested do the trick for me, plus they're way cheaper. I've only used them on a slate though. Wetnotes I don't know.

I use the Mr. Clean Magic Erasers to clean my slates...they work awesome on both slates and white dry erase boards.

Make your own according to requirements. I have many different types depending on use. This is my deco/run slate for dives up to 300ft. Top "page" for communication, bottom for deco/run and back contains ICE details. All you need is PVC pipe, grinder, bungee, plastic/lead pencil and imagination.

i was wondering if anyone tried the rite in the rain notebooks

Apparently Rite In The Rain's top of the line stuff is used in the "plastic sheets that do not stick together underwater" wet notes style made by whoever makes the one they used to sell at DiveGear Express.

The standard Rite in the Rain notebooks don't work for diving that well. The staples rusts, the binder rings collapse spilling all the pages, and the pages themselves are not writeable under water since they do get wet, though the pages themselve do not fall apart underwater.
