Killed my DC1400

On my recent dive to the Bahamas my housing flooded and killed my brand new DC1400 (first use ), don't know if it was something I did or not. I'm assuming I just didn't check the o-ring well enough as the housing didn't flood when i rented another 1400 and used it in the housing. Anyway, I have looked for just the camera but it appears no one sells just the camera so I bought a Sony RX100 (now I need a housing). So I have two questions:
1. Does anyone know where I can buy just the camera as I have a housing and the strobes (I am trying to sell them)?
2. Will the Sealife strobe work with a Recsea housing?

Any info would be appreciated.

I would definitely contact Sealife. Shouldn't have flooded on the first use IMO. They usually are pretty good to work with.


...And yes if it comes down to it you can buy just a camera through Sealife without the housing.

I developed a housing issue with a DC1200 that I had used for a year. Some of the buttons did not work below 100 ft. Sealife was very helpful and good to work with. Even got the new housing in time for a dive only a few days away.

I discourage divers with less than 100 from buying a camera, but many do, many do ok - and floodings happen to everyone. I also encourage good insurance. List it on home insurance, State Farm Personal Articles Policy, etc.

Thank you for your wonderful response. It never occurred to me that if I had over 100 dives instead of 50+ I would have never made this mistake. I can't wait until I'm flawless like you.

Sorry if I seemed rude. I've always wished that tact was easier for me. I hope SL will make you a good deal on a replacement, and that you can get good insurance as these things happen.

I would also recommend that you reach out to the gang at Sealife. They are always good - particularly about new equipment problems. Too nice a system to pitch. And I always keep a spare camera with me. I have an older DC1000 model and a DC1200. Often have used both during serial dives when one craps out (batteries usually). I find that the video light works well for stills, so you might consider the new SL light.

Thanks all. I did reach out to Sealife and they pointed me to where I could get a replacement camera. As for insurance, I did look into it at DAN and discovered that for water damage the deductible ls $250 and the cost of the DC 1400 only about $240.

I like DAN for dive insurance and medical aid, but nothing else they try impresses me. It's a membership driven organization so if enough members tell them to add camera or gear insurance, they try to shop it - but something went wrong.

State Farm's Personal Article Policy is available in Texas I know, quite affordable, claims are easy, and they pay well. I know because I had a bad year with laptops, etc. and they paid well. They decided I was too much of a klutz and dropped me after several claims, but they held their part of the bargain well.

Or you might prefer to list such on your home insurance. Your agent can explain, whether you own or rent.

Glad you got yours replaced for $250, but sorry you're out that much. Good luck.

They didn't offer to replace the camera for you or give you a discount? I would at least ask them since the camera was never used. Most they can say is No.
