There was a thread a couple of years ago that got so contentious the entire thread was pulled, which almost never happens. The entire story never came out, but here is the gist of what did come out. Two guys were fishing all day, accompanied by a number of beers--the exact number unknown. As dusk approached, they decided to grab a scuba tank, a spear, etc. and drop down to about 200 feet where the big fish are. They separated, as is common when spear fishing, so the one who made it back had no way of knowing what happened to the one who didn't.

Today, at age 55 no way! No more than a couple beers the night before a dive.

In the past, yes (as a teen and twenty-something), I dove with fairly good hang overs.

The increased O2 at depth, plus the anesthetic effect of nitrogen did wonders for the hangover (headache miraculously "cured"). ;)

"Stay Sober Out There".

Best wishes.

So 10% do it, 2% admit it and many more dive with some amount still left from the night before. Next question, how many have a drink shortly after diving? When vacation diving, it often starts with a beer at lunch after the last dive. I have thought about bringing a cooler of negra modellos on the dive boat, but haven't yet.

Nothing unusual about a big cooler full of beer on the boat to drink on the run back AFTER the last dive. I go on many boats where this is the norm.

There's a distinct difference between "had a beer at lunch" and "went diving drunk"

Not to Belgians :) (actually, that might be closer to the truth than you think LOL)

It's funny about diving that there is generally such an wide spread acceptance of the use of recreational drugs, including alcohol, but such a taboo about alcoholism. You even see it on the medical form. You could be a 5 alarm bags-under-the-eyes junkie and pass the medical with no questions asked but if you were treated for a drinking problem in the last 5 years, even if a single drop hasn't passed your lips in 4 then you'll get a "yes" on the form and have to consult a doctor before you dive (assuming you even manage to get permission).

It's no wonder nobody wants to talk about it.

R..

me and my brother in cozumel he drank to many tequila shots at night hungover diving next day puked in his reg at 80 feet.

Because no one ever lies on the medical forms...

What about being stoned? Must be freaky?!?

I frequently pop a beer before my drysuit is off. I've even dove with one clipped to my BCD for a long surface swim we did after a night dive. I'm not blaming the beer, but that dive did end with my mask spending 4 months at the bottom of a lake :/ The first micro brew after a day of diving tastes pretty darn good, especially if you are diving in water cold enough to just leave the beer at the entry point.

What about being stoned?

IMO that should be reserved for those who blaspheme or violate the Sabath, but that seems a little off topic...
