Hi all!

I'm a solo female going to Cozumel just before Christmas to mid January. I'm looking for a safe but fun dive shop and hotel/condo to stay at. I have my own gear, am advanced certified and would like to do two dives a day. I'm interested in seeing turtles, whales, sharks and large schools of fish. Any advice is appreciated :)

Thanks!

The only whales I have seen in about 25 trip to Cozumel were at some hotel pools.

You have lots of choices that will meet the rest of your requirements, To help narrow it down, what else are you interested. Party a bit or just relax? All Inclusive or meals on your own? What price range (hotel rating)? The good news is you shoulds havew no trouble finding safe places that meet your needs in Cozumel.

You can whale watch at the cruise ship piers as well. :D

But what he said, doing 2 dives a day is standard and you will be back at your hotel by noon-1pm. What do you want to do the rest of the time?

Hi awap,

Good questions! This is my first trip to Cozumel. Finding a reliable and safe dive company is priority. I'm not into partying (I'm allergic to alcohol - seriously) but that doesn't mean I don't like fun. It would be great to meet other travellers. I'm 36yrs old. I'm a bit weary of all-inclusive meals after my diving trip Isla de la Juventud in Cuba but if the food is good in Cozumel, I can do all inclusive. For the hotel, I would like 3 stars or more. Looking at mid-range pricing. I would rather sacrifice hotel luxuries for more diving.

Also is 3 weeks in Cozumel too long? Will I get bored of the diving? During my last trip to Cuba, the island advertised 54 different dive sites but when I got to the island, they told me they really only visit 20 sites and after 6 dives, I realized I had seen everything there was to see. There was no variety between the dive sites. I'm hoping Cozumel will have more variety.

Thanks!

We just got back from a week at Scuba Club. My 6th time their and my family's first time. The food was very good (we went the full food plan) with plenty of variety and sufficient quantity to have gained a few pounds. We had 2 boat dives a day and also most days grabbed a tank for a shore dive in the afternoon and evening.

I have been there solo before and met all kinds of people so never felt 'alone'. Depends, I guess, on how out-going a person you want to be.

Cuba actually has great diving variety being a huge island, though I can understand Isla de Juventud to be more limited. Dives in Havana Bay and the Bay of Pigs were especially memorable, though decidely un-fishy. Cozumel is probably somewhere in between variety wise, but definitely fishier. There is definite variety between the wall dives and the reeftop dives, but besides a wreck and a few other special sites, you'll probably have seen about all there is to see in a week or so. That's fine for many people who are just happy to be underwater. For me, if I'm diving with my camera, I can find plenty of things to occupy my time even diving the same site over and over again. But without camera, I'm not sure I'd want to spend three weeks in one place. Heck, I got bored at Wakatobi before my ten day stretch was up, after my camera died on me.

Without much trouble, you could ferry to the mainland to try diving that side, try diving cenotes, ferry to Isla Mujeres, etc. Though you might wish you stayed on Cozumel. I tried Cancun once and it was very similar to South Florida - no reason to leave the U.S. for that.

The cheapest all-inclusives might be in line foodwise with AI food in Cuba. I don't remember Hotel Cozumel dinners being any more edible than some of the mystery meat and canned veggies I experienced on Cuba, but the food quality improves as the room rate increases. Cozumel Palace, for instance, is quite good.

But you don't need the alcohol, so why pay for it? Scuba Club is an all-inclusive that doesn't include alcohol but those who have stayed there seem to enjoy the food. You'd be surrounded with the same divers you're diving with during the trip, so meeting people will be easier. And the variety would increase since the shore diving has its own special attributes: lots of juveniles and other critters to discover that you won't find elsewhere on the reefs. Since you're not drinking, you can night shoredive as well, again expanding the variety of sea life to experience. There are many reports about Scuba Club on Scubaboard, including lots of pictures.

Edit: Just saw gstrek's post after submitting mine. Apparently I wasn't alone in thinking Scuba Club would be right for you. Caveat - I have not stayed there personally since I prefer my AIs with alcohol, but should my liver ever fail, I'd try it in a heartbeat.

When we used to vacation on Cozumel, part of the attraction was the local food... just my opinion, but NOT going with an all-inclusive choice would expose you to much more of what the island has to offer. Both in terms of variety of local fare, and things you discover on your way to/from your food choices. We stayed a few times at Baldwin's Guest House, which is a B&B back town that had a little casita for weekly rentals, at Casita Caribe which was closer to the square but I don't think is available anymore, at a rented apartment near what is now Guido's deli. If you budget for a bicycle, it won't matter where you stay, everything will be accessible to you. We spent about eight years doing 4-12 weeks on the island, so no, I don't think 3 weeks is too long. :-)

Good luck! and enjoy your trip here.

Au contraire! It is well possible to dive the same site over and over again and discover new stuff every time. Start looking for the smaller things. Or keep an eye out (i.e. away from the reef) for random encounters of macro life that wasn't there before.

I would think 3 weeks would be too long for us. I like a week to 10 days but the wife (and cat) seem to think a week is more than enough.

If you are going for 3 weeks, you probably should consider changing hotels (and shops) just to broaden the experience. One good choice is Scuba Club Cozumel. It is a very different AI - rooms, meals, and diving with all the shore tanks you want. (Their shore dive is not on a coral reef, but plenty of structure and life). We usually do 3 or 4 dives a day when we stay there so that might get to be a bit much over 3 weeks. Their food is quite good and it is less than a mile walk to town. I'd recommend you also look at an in town hotel and one of the smaller dive ops. That will give you a chance to do a few of the more distant sites that SCC tends to avoid. While there are plenty of great dive ops, I suggest you contact BlueXT (http://www.bluextseadiving.com/). Christi can set you up with diving and an in town hotel as well as plenty of info on a single female diver on Cozumel

I stay for the winter and can't believe how fast it goes by, and I took month-long trips to Cozumel before I retired, so I don't think 3 weeks is too long. I would recommend Blue Angel Resort; lots of divers staying there and it has a really friendly vibe (the owner is Canadian also). It's not all inclusive but there is a good restaurant on site and lots of others nearby. You can shore dive there when you aren't out on the boat. The hotel itself is not very big, which is something I like in a vacation property. The shop there goes to all the dive sites, including up north which you will want to do because the spotted eagle rays will be schooling up there that time of year.
