My wife, 12 year old son and I are looking for our first regulators to purchase. We would like nice dependable models. Don't have to be too cheap but not top of the line models either. Any suggestions?

I highly recommend HOG. Reasonably priced and well built too.

I'm a cheapskate in a big way. HOG regulators are the best bang for the buck I've found. I have three of the 2nds and one (as of now) edge epic 1st. I'll get more shortly.

I second, or third, or whatever number we are up to HOG regs. I teach HOG regulator service, I dive HOG regulators and I sell HOG regulators. They are the only reg I want to teach, dive or sell because I believe in the product and the company.

Not to be a naysayer but there are 2 issues with HOGs that make them less than ideal for many divers, there are not many dealers so service can be hard to find and most rec divers do not want DIN connections. They are good regs but for a lot of divers those are significant problems which make them less than ideal regs, esp if they want local support.

They don't have to buy the whole package but just the 2nd stage regs. If there looking at buying a whole package then I would recommend "EDGE", same company as hog just more directed at rec stuff were "HOG" is aimed more at Tec diving if I'm not mistaken. Good call and valid points Herman.

I own 10 Atomic regs, 6 Apex, and 17 HOGs (1st and 2nds). Atomics are great regs. Probably nothing better. The HOGs are the first reg that I have ever used that breath as well as the Atomics, and have been as dependable as the Atomics. What makes the HOGs "better" in my opinion, is that they are half the price of the Atomics and deliver the same Work Of Breathing, and the same quality. I am a service technician for Atomic and HOG. I prefer my HOGs to work on, and HOG allows owners to take a course to learn how to service their own regs. Finally, the owership and managers of EDGE-HOG are good people, divers and really stand behind their products in ways I have never seen a manufacturer do before.

Just my 2psi.

These are very valid points, and as Aquabot pointed out, you can go with Edge for a setup that is more rec oriented from the factory. My wife dives an Edge setup & I have multiple HOG setups. They are the only regulators we have either owned, but we rented for a while before I made a purchase. There is also the option to have your HOG D1 (first stage) converted to yoke. I had Jim Lapenta do this for me on one of my setups & I'm very pleased. So that is always an option as well, albeit not the simplest one.

As far as the local service support (I have expressed this thought in one other thread I believe) ... if that is one of your concerns be sure to talk to your local service tech. When I spoke with mine, the turnaround time was the same as if I shipped the regs out to Jim to have them serviced. Also, depending on what the LDS is qualified to service in house, they may send the reg out themselves prolonging the service even longer. They may offer to service many brands of regs but only be qualified to service one brand in house. Just things to consider.
