Sharks vs Lightning

I've heard that as well--you're pretty safe at depth. Unfortunately you have to be on the surface, even briefly, at some point. And there are also the long surface swims. In thinking about it, these are times when I don't think about sharks at all.

They recently held a shark fishing competition here in Halifax. Two thoughts:
1. I am surprised this occurs each year due to the shark populations (there was a controversy one year I think). I suppose it's OK if all of the sharks are consumed. Probably a needle in the haystack compared to the commercial fishing, finning, etc. Kind os like my shell collecting.
2. A 9'+ one was caught. That will get me thinking a little when diving.

The only time I've ever observed aggressive behavior in a shark was in Hood Canal, on a very poor vis day. My buddy and I suddenly found ourselves in the midst of several mudsharks, that kept charging at us and veering off quickly. It was unnerving, because it seemed like pack behavior ... you could almost imagine them barking and growling. I figure that's probably why they call 'em dogfish. They followed us all the way back to the boat, and continued charging at us, although they never quite made contact.

Something that gets missed in all of this is that sharks are delicious animals.

One of the things I miss since moving away from coastal SoCal is the lack of fishermen who will kick me down free shark, yellowfin, etc..
