I've heard that as well--you're pretty safe at depth. Unfortunately you have to be on the surface, even briefly, at some point. And there are also the long surface swims. In thinking about it, these are times when I don't think about sharks at all.
They recently held a shark fishing competition here in Halifax. Two thoughts:
1. I am surprised this occurs each year due to the shark populations (there was a controversy one year I think). I suppose it's OK if all of the sharks are consumed. Probably a needle in the haystack compared to the commercial fishing, finning, etc. Kind os like my shell collecting.
2. A 9'+ one was caught. That will get me thinking a little when diving.
