My partner and I are planning a little dive trip in QLD and NSW in Septermber. As I am looking at some dive sites I came across this tidbit from one of the sites which says:

"Safety Sausage, Dive Whistle and Divers Knife needs to be carried on all dives in Queensland waters."

It's only necessary on a commercial dive charter, if you dive privately from a private boat or from the shore those rules do not apply! (I have never been checked to have those things in QLD or NSW).

I'm a bit concerned by the news that there are certain items you have to carry (aside from the obvious!) ...where can I find out a definitive list?
thanks!

+another for Byron Bay and Sundive for great diving at Julian Rocks and awesome place to spend time topside. While you're in QLD don't miss the Yongala south of Townsville..my fav dive in the entire world

Byron Bay is a definite and we spoke with Sundive and will probably go with them.
Unfortunately won't be able to get to Townsville.

QLD law states all divers must carry a whistle, safety sausage or SMB and a cutting device (either knife or shears etc)

That stuff is not required by law in NSW but I think it's still a good idea to have it.
