Does anybody know of any good dive shops or divers they could recommend as a buddy / DM / tour guide in the Kas and Fethiye areas ? I'm on holidays and have set aside 3 days to dive in these areas. I'd appreciate any info .

Thanks
Glen

I would recommend staying in Kas. I went there 3 times and really love both this place both for diving and the non-diving. There are a lot of dive shops, but I know only one Archipel diving. They are very good: friendly, serious about security, very knowlegeable of the dive sites, confortable boat. If you go there, ask them to go to Canyon or Tunnel, both very spectacular dive sites...
If you have any other questions, do not hesitate!

Thanks Malene, I'll look them up. So far, I am looking into 2 in Kas, Sirena and Sundiving. I'll be staying in both Kas and Fethiye, so I'm looking for recommendations for both spots. Thanks for your thoughts on Kas .

Thought I'd let you know about the diving in Turkey . I just returned from Kas and Fethiye in Turkey. Hakkan's boat ( Anil - DM ) at Sirena diving in Kas and then Elite diving in Fethiye. Good experience with both outfits, good dive equipment, good boats and well run. 12 dives total. ( 6 each ) I was the only diver with the DM with Sirena for day 1 as it was early in the season. They even took me out as a single diver for my night dive. Transferred to Archipel's boat for the day 2 ( being a single diver ) and dove with the same DM from Sirena. More people diving with Elite in Fethiye and I found Elite to be especially accomodating with divers of different skill levels. DM's are helpful with your gear, ( I rented most ) and once they know you are OK with the gear, the trust is there. Also, DM's are watchful when diving, but again leave you plenty of room to do " your own thing ". They ask about remaining air which I'm fine with. Very much my style of diving. Not an abundance of fish, but some plus amphora, old anchors, some critters such as octopus and squid, some interesting " canyons and tunnels ", just fun diving with good viz and warmer waters. All in all, good diving and I'd use both again without hesitation. Thanks again for the help

Thanks for the report. How would you compare diving in Kas and Fethiye?
And how was your night dive? Is there more critters during the night?
I am going back to Kas in September and will dive with Archipel (I am the faithfull kind ;-) ) but their approach of diving seems very similar to Sirena's. I think that diving in Turkey, or at least this part of Turkey, is not a tourist thing. There are a lot of Turkish divers who dive almost all year long, so they took diving seriously (in a positive way).
Thanks again for the report!

I live in Fethiye (opposite Elites mooring :) and I can tell you at this time of the year there are tourist and local divers a-plenty :)
I'm only just getting back into it and have dived with both Elite and European dive centre's and found both to be ok. Although there are soooo many dive centres to choose from
The visibility is good at this time of the year. Not as much sea life as Sth East Asia but I'm told the fish are coming back after years of dynamite fishing in the area which has now been banned.

Ramazon this year 2013 is : 9 July - 7 August the daylight fasting, though a lot of local people on the Aegean coast only follow it for a few days, and this does not affect the tourists coming here.
Although it is hot in the summer now we are 35c 95f going up to 40+c 104f do not be surprised to feel a few days of 45c 114f but the humidity is very low so you are not constantly dripping.
I can only comment on current dive locations in Turkey. I am originally a BSAC UK diver and dived many places in the world. I came here for 2 week and now 5 years later am still here. The whole coast has many dive centres just make sure they offer what you are looking for and qualified.
What I can say is if you are interested in fish, no sharks, squid, cuttlefish, some turtles, Octopi, and one school of Dolphins good clear viz above all amphora and geology then where we dive is awesome there are also caves and some great reefs with the odd ancient wreck . Our sites are no more than 5-15 mins off shore by boat with 6 or 7 sites on the shore. There are many dive centres up and down the coast, and as previously said in another reply we dive all year round. I have no axe to grind as we do not work for any dive company; we just enjoy the sea especially the med as we have no (very little) currents.
How many people can dive most days when they want to and say they drive past one of the Seven Wonders of the World (Ephesus) to dive, as we dive at the mouth of the old harbour?

Here is my girlfriends blog on her experience of diving in Turkey. One thing for sure diving here is still undiscovered and there is always only one boat at any site.

I hope this gives you some information about local diving here in Kusadasi we are 35 mins south of Izmir airport.
If you need information about the Aegean coast I will try and help

Nick

There is now a facebook page called 'Fethiye Divers' if anyone wants to talk to people 'on the ground' so to speak for info regarding diving Fethiye and surrounds.
