So, what's the scoop on all the tolls going to electronic on the FL turnpike? We're coming down in May, and have always just paid tolls in cash. If you're renting a car how does that work? Do the rental companies have a Sun Pass you can buy for a short period of time? Wonder how much they bend you over for to get one? Any ideas?

I know the rental car companies have Sun Pass but I do not know what they charge for it.

I have heard that rental car companies will rent you a Sunpass for a flat daily rate of 7 or 15 bucks.
That seems pretty cheap.
Check this out.

Using Rental Cars in SunPass, EPASS and LeeWay Lanes
Enjoy the convenience of SunPass ONLY, EPASS ONLY and LeeWay Only lanes when renting a car, even without your SunPass transponder. When renting a vehicle, just ask your rental car agency about electronic tolling, which allows rental car customers to use the SunPass ONLY, EPASS ONLY and LeeWay lanes to bypass congestion and traffic. Participating rental car companies are listed below. So, the next time you, a friend or family member are renting a car in Florida, remember to ask about SunPass.
For more information on specific rental car programs, please contact your local rental car agency as each agency has separate programs and fees associated with electronic toll usage.

you could also just buy one at locally a Publix or wherever and tack it onto a credit card.
I bet you can get them online also.

Has 2 SunPass thingies.

It's true. If you are just driving down, get yourself a sunpass (you'll have to pre-load it with 30 bucks, but it's good forever) at the first rest area you come to in Florida. Every Publix and Walgreens also carry them. If you don't like the thought of the sunpass on your window, get the thick one and velcro it on, then throw it in the glovebox till next time. If you rent a car, the rental will come with a sunpass, but I think it's very expensive at 5 or 7 bucks per day. The final option if you drive is to use toll by plate. They'll just look your plate up and bill you later. I think it costs an extra $0.25 or $0.50 per toll booth for the toll by plate.

Just did this...renting a vehicle in Florida, you get screwed...yes they have Sun Pass available....however, here's the catch: If you use it at anytime during your rental period, you will get a pental charge starting from the 1st day you rent it until the last day, plus any toll charges. So, here's the rub...We rented a car for 5 days...didn't use any tolls until our last day...we were charged (as I mentioned) a fee for all 5 days. That sucks!

A few years back when I realized that I was traveling down to Florida at least 3 or 4 times a year I decided to get a Sun Pass. I bought the one that uses the suction cups this way I can use it in both rental cars and my own car. Like Dive California said, after getting hit with the rental fees I decided to just buy one.

Pa is talking about going to the same thing- all electronic tolls, either easy pass or picture of the plate and mail you a bill. The unions representing the toll booth workers don't like it one little bit.

Thanks all, that's kinda what I thought. We fly in to FLL and jump on the turnpike there...tolls are maybe $5 - $7 total each way, so you pay the rental company $50 to rent the darn thing to cover < $20 in tolls. I'll hit the first Publix we see and grab one.

Not exactly, the companies are all a bit different

If you buy one, get the portable version.
