How does this differ from US, European or Japanese companies that develop large complexes in other countries? Is it that the Chinese are doing it... or that it is on Yap and will possibly destroy that destination by excessive tourism?

It's not really different from US/Euro/Japanese resorts. Any big development will trash the place, which in the case of Yap is an especially sad thing.

I'm glad we got to see it while it was still pristine....something I am saying more and more, unfortunately.

All the best, James

I am afraid that is just the way that the world turns. I have lived in the Caribbean for nearly 40 years, and I have seen one beautiful unspoilt island after another whack up some big foreign hotel to try and bring in the tourists (not always successfully).

It's sad. But I am afraid there is no stopping it.

"In their vision to create what they term a “world class island international tourism resort” in Yap, ETG also plans to build convention centers, casinos, and entertainment centers. To complement the need for such world-class resorts, tentative plans of development also include the construction of 8 to 15 golf courses."

Casinos and 8 to 15 golf courses? Are they nuts? I wonder if stone money will be acceptable at the blackjack tables.

I want to see the slot machines

After a quick look at Yap in Google Earth, I don't think there is actually enough land acerage for 15 golf courses...

The four primary islands that make up Yap together cover 38.7 sq mi, or 24,768 acres. At approx. 150 acres/golf course, you could have 165 golf courses there. The Chinese are thinking small.

There are resorts built/managed to cater to Western, Japanese and Korean tastes, and now as the Chinese middle class grows resorts will be developed to meet their needs. As China has a population of 1.3 billion, and is not too far from many fine dive areas, I expect that Yap will not be the last……..Need to get a few more places crossed off my list sooner, rather than later.
