I have a question that's dependent on the answers on the poll, from DIR-trained (GUE Fundies/UTD Essentials of Tech etc.) divers only, please. And I think it might be of general interest in any case. If applicable, you can vote once each in open water, wreck penetration, and cave categories.

Thanks,

Guy

I voted 1.5hrs, though it was between 1.5 and 2 hours, but I rounded down.

It was kinda shallow and I wasn't gas-limited, table-limited, or temperature limited, I was just bored. Prolly coulda done 2-2.5, but I had stuff to do.

I'm interested to see the question this leads to.

Open water, longest run time was just shy of 160 minutes, average 20 feet. Boring training dive. Spent much of it searching for line in a blacked out mask.

Longest real dive was just over 2 hours.

I'm not sure whether you are asking what the maximum run we've done is, or what the maximum run time we think is reasonable is.

I think my longest OW dive was 90 minutes; we planned for a 60 minute run time, but got to our 20 foot stop, and the reef was so beautiful, and the water so clear, and we were so warm and comfortable, that we decided to swim back to the boat, rather than surface and board the RIB. In general, I plan for a 60 minute run time, because I don't want to do more than an Al40's worth of deco. At home, that's as long as I can stay warm, anyway.

In caves, my standard run time nowadays is 2.5 hours. That's as long as I currently want to swim.

I'd love to hear why anyone does an OW dive >2.5hrs instead of splitting it up unless it's really deep and deco is most of that.

Well, if you dive in Monterey, some of the most interesting topography is a long swim from shore. Without a scooter, you are looking at long run times, if you want to get out and see the exciting places.

Half as many entries, exit, and climbs across the beach and up and down the stairs/hill
:)

Gear up at B. Walk to the water. Cross the rocky shore. Hope the surf isn't big.

Is this question related to "how long of a dive would i do" or "how much time would i accept to be committed to being in the water" (eg. deco obligation, time to swim to shore, etc.)?
