I'm a Fish!
I've been shooting SLRs on land since the late 70s and now DSLRs. Originally, I shot Nikon and now shoot Canon 7D and 5D2.... mostly I do nature, wildlife, and fine arts stuff. I've shot professionally (on land) on and off over the years.....

I have tried several solutions over the years for underwater - short of SLR housings that I could never afford. I had a couple of Sea & Sea Motormarine (original and II) film cameras.... More recently, a Canon SD500 with Ikelite Housing and AF35 strobes and a Canon S90 with Ikelite and AF35s. I was never happy with any of them.... UW photography never "took off" for me mostly due to the inadequate and limiting equipment I had.....

A couple of months ago, I was seriously considering taking the plunge and house my Canon 7D or 5D2. While researching "all that", I came across the PEN cameras..... Prior to that, I never gave Olympus much thought -- played with an OM2 in the 80s -- that's it. I always considered them 2nd tier to Nikon and Canon.

Everything I read about these new PEN 4/3 cameras seemed too good to be true..... Large sensors, SLR-like fast focusing, little shutter lag, excellent interchangeable glass, full manual, TTL flash, HD video -- and the kicker (my 7D has all the previous features) -- physically small so housings are not astronomically expensive.....

Skeptically, I ordered a PL2 with Oly housing, 14-42 II, Zen dome, and a pair of S&S YS-110a strobes. Total investment: Under $3k. Less than a decent housing and port for my 7D, let alone strobes. I've dove them several times now and have most SOPs figured out..... I'm extremely happy with the choice. I look forward to wringing out this system in the coming months and seeing what kinds of results I can come up with.....

As far as IQ goes.... I did some informal testing (on land) with my 7D/Canon 24-105L and the PL2 with 14-42 II -- I'd say the Oly gives the somewhat larger APS-C sensor 7D a run for its money. I can see a difference at 200% mag and at stupid-high ISO settings... but at ISO 200 and realistic magnifications, IQ is indistinguishable. Head and shoulders above the tiny sensors on P&S cameras like the S90.

Handling-wise.... I think the "SLR-like fast focusing and little shutter lag" often said about the PL2 is somewhat of an exaggeration.... My 7d focuses noticeably faster and has zero shutter lag. The PL2, however, is extremely fast for a contrast-based AF system and faster than the 7D in Live View, which is a fairer comparison. Compared to my previous S-90 and SD500, its night and day. I missed shots with those cameras all the time... not so far with the PL2.... If I were shooting a football or BBall game, I would not choose the PL2 over the 7D by any means.... However, as far as UW goes, I beleive the PL2 is plenty fast enough and MUCH faster than any P&S.

I have about a dozen dives planned this coming weekend..... will come back and discuss further....

IMHO, Olympus hit a home run with these little cameras.......

If UW PEN is a passing fad...... then I'm a moron.... This is here to stay, IMHO.

They are nice cameras

I too have just taken the plunge on a EPL2 setup (basically the same bar a single YS01 strobe) and am away at the weekend for a week on a liveaboard in the Redsea to try it out. One thing which would be of interest would be your SOP's. As its my first step up from compact cameras, theres a lot to tinker with and advice would be a great. Ideas for good setups for WA and macro would really help as I dont have much time to play with the system before going at the weekend, and definately no dives before the liveaboard to
Shutter Speed/Aperture/Focus and Metering types/White Balance?/Auto ISO ?/Image stabilisation on/off etc
Any tips greatfully recieved

DoNot....Thank you for posting.....I look foreward to following along. I also just got the 2...And having no SLR background, it is a great learning curve......So any help is always

I wish you the best of luck on your holiday.... I'm a bit envious.... Although I do live in South Florida and diving here is fantastic... I'd give an appendage to spend some time diving the Red Sea..... Its on the list -- one of these days....

This is what I've come up with so far...... I do encourage experimentation...

Shutter Speed: Flash synch works up to 1/180 -- I keep it pretty high -- 1/125 and above. This helps control ambient light exposure and favors the strobe for lighting.... If you are doing wide shots with a lot of background (assuming you have the viz to do this), then a slower speed may be in order.

Aperture: I keep them small (F/8 and up) to give me some decent depth of field. On macro this is even more critical.

Focus/Metering: Single shot AF and pattern metering. This seems counter intuitive (with manual you get automatic) , but if you put the camera on Manual (select both aperture and shutter) with forced fill flash and the strobe on TTL, the camera will cause the strobe to put out enough light to match whatever shutter speed/aperture you picked. This works rather well on most shots. You can play with the light output control on the stobe to fine-tune. On my earlier cameras I used to shoot full manual.... TTL seems better, although I still use full manual on tricky lighting situations. Here is a good tutotial on UW lighting -- in fact, that whole site is excellent: Underwater Photography Lighting Guide - DivePhotoGuide.com

White Balance: Auto or underwater. I shoot RAW+JPG, and work with the RAW if I get serious about a print.... I recommend using the RAW file for anything other than a quick review as it allows the greatest amount of flexibility (as in total) in post processing. WB is fully adjustable in a RAW (to a lesser extent in JPG too) file during post processing. I shoot RAW+JPG because cards are cheap and there is no downside to having the extra file, otherwise, it would be RAW only. If I want to email or show someone a quick image, there is a JPG.... The biggest reason I work with RAW is because JPG files are compressed... this means (among other things) that any edits you do (even cropping) actually does harm to the image quality because the image has to be recompressed. I use Adobe Lightroom for 90% of my post processing and Photoshop CS5 sometimes....

Auto ISO: No -- I stick to ISO 200 and bump it up as needed. The PL2 like most cameras (my 7d is just as guilty) makes dumb Auto ISO decisions, IMHO.... High ISOs degrade IQ by creating noise and color shifts. With the PL2, I'd say 800 (1600 maybe if the scene is well lit, etc - noise is more apparent in shadow areas) is the highest practical ISO unless you're trying to do something creative with the noise.... either way, this is something YOU should control.

IS: So far I've left it on and see no harm from it.

WA/Macro -- Well... I have the 14-42 with the Zen dome so the widest I get is true 14mm (28mm, full frame 35 equivalent). This lens does focus rather close, but it could hardly be called macro..... I thought about picking up a 9-18 and/or 45mm macro as well but decided to keep it simple and get intimately comfortable with the 14-42 1st. I will likely add the 45mm next since we have a few excellent local dives that are a macro paradise such as the Blue Heron bridge... With the macro you should use the flat port that came with the housing and not the Zen. The Zen is perfect for the 9-18 and 14-42.

The biggest tip of all: DO NOT forget to pop up that flash before you put the camera in the housing. I read this same statement a dozen times in as many boards before I bought the thing... and guess what I did 1st time out...... you got it.... :bonk: Luckily it was a shallow dive and I was able to resurface and take care of the problem..... I did feel VERY uncomfortable opening the back of that dripping-wet housing with a wet body (me) hanging over it.....

Again... enjoy and let us know how it went.... If I can help in any other way, please let me know...

This post is worthless without PICTURES!

(I have a PL2 - about to get the Oly housing).

:shakehead: ROFL!! Here you go: EJ Morales Photography

The Florida Keys 2011 gallery was all shot with the PL2/Zen Dome/14-42 II/twin S&S YS-110a strobes.

If you hover your mouse over any image, a red "I" will appear in the top right corner of the image... Hover over the "I" and a popup will appear with all the EXIF data for the shot.

More to come....

if u have the time, really would like you to compare the epl3 and epl2 :D
