Has anyone ever travelled with their Scuba Equipment on Delta Airlines? Do they charge for Checked Scuba Equipment? Are they a decent airline? I usually travel with Air Canada or West Jet out of Toronto but taking Delta this time (due to Cost) to Cozumel through Atlanta...
Being that Atlanta is their hub, we fly Delta almost exclusively because we like non-stop. We flew to Grand Cayman in June and they charged $30.00 for each dive bag (you only get one bag free, the rest are $30.00.) I've never had a problem with schedules or lost/delayed luggage.
I fly Delta all the time. For international travel in coach you get 2 bags free, up to 50lbs each. In first class you get 3. The only issues I've had with them is if my bags are overweight. They don't always weigh them, but overweight bags are $50 each.
I've had them lose (delay) my bags three times in 700K miles of travel. I consider that an acceptable rate.
Of course, the trip to London when they left my suitbag in Atlanta was a little annoying. I had a customer meeting the day after arriving and my bags arrived on day 3 as I was leaving for the airport for my return flight. Delta made it less annoying by buying me a new suit, shirt, tie, and shoes for my meeting.
Delta and Southwest have been my choice airlines as they have actually been the only two to come through consistently with my bags. They do charge a hidden fee they should include in the cost of the ticket (I say hidden because despite the fact its in writing before hand they conveniently dont include it into the ticket price) but they are a friendly airline. As a personal opinion Id rather walk though then use continental as I have been left stranded at airports, they have never got my luggage to where it was supposed to be on time and had serious delays on other flights. I have flown them around 10 times and been disappointed 10 times by them.

Why would Delta or any airline for that matter even know that you have scuba equipment?
The only folks that know whats in your bags are the TSA screeners?
My wife and I fly Delta all the time, as we live in Minneapolis, which is one of their hubs. We've had very good luck with them, including the one time we traveled with our scuba gear. A couple of flight delays here and there over the past couple of years, but only delayed suitcase (got it back the next day).
I think they charge $25 for the first bag or two and something more than that for additional bags. If you have their AmEx credit card you get one bag free for everyone on your reservation, so that might make sense as an option for you if you're going to travel with them a lot in the future. I believe the card is free the first year.

Traveled recently with gear, no problem just packed it in regular luggage. I fly 3 or 4 times a year out of Atl, and i've only had a long delay once. And that was during the snow storms last winter.
Hmm good to read that, i also want to go after some days with my
family for a trip so this information is very useful for me, i am thinking i used delta airlines to go.
