I used to have a Canon PowerShot SD850 IS. There was a button that you can set as a customize button. I set it as a custom white balance button (this way I could set the white balance with one touch, not needing to go into the menu options) Please look at the image below.

I have been trying to find other canon cameras having this feature, especially if the S95 has it

. Also can the button be used with an underwater housing

The S and G series cameras have a "custom" setting selection via the dial on top of the camera. The S cameras have one C setting and G cameras have two.

Two ways to use the custom white balance:

1. Set the white balance from the menu choices to "custom" in the shooting mode you want and when you turn the camera off then back on it will still be in the "custom" white balance setting.

2. Select the custom white balance from the menu choices then save it in the C setting. While diving you turn the dial to C on the S cameras or C1 or C2 on the G cameras when you want to shoot custom white balance. It is done via the same dial on the underwater housing.

As you already know you have to re-calibrate the white balance at varying depths and lighting conditions. All of that can be avoided by shooting RAW which allows you to adjust the white balance in post processing, regardless of the white balance setting, with the Canon software (Digital Photo Professional) supplied with the camera.

There is no substitute for shooting RAW with non-strobe shots. Custom white balance is the closest you can get to RAW and it still doesn't compare.

I set the customize button to custom white balance. I point the camera at whitish sand, push the button, and get an amazingly good white balance setting.

I'm sure a dive slate would work just as good as the sand, and I've even seen white fins that would work great as the white reference point.

I also wonder if pointing toward the surface, toward the light would work as well. Easy to do, but haven't tried yet.

Thanks for the info. To clarify, when I need to adjust the white balance during a dive. Do I need to go into the menu ---> white balance ----> custom white balance -----> then manually set the white balance. Or predive set it up where one button sets the white balance?

You cannot just press one button. On my G10 (and probably the S cameras) you can leave your last menu setting on white balance so that when you press the "func set" button (#8 in the below photo) the menu pops up on the monitor with white balance highlighted. You then have to press the "DISP" button (#11 in the below photo) while pointing at a white card or sand etc. This is all the more reason to shoot RAW.

I shot JPG for years and calibrated my custom WB off a white card. When I got my G10 it took me awhile to switch to RAW. I'll never go back to JPG for non-strobe shots.

IMO you should not buy a new camera that does not have RAW capability. The S95 can do just about everything you need and takes great photos. The G12 is larger and has more features and an articulating monitor for topside use.

Canon S90 has it and I assume the S95 has it too.

I think this was what the OP was looking for. On my S90 and other Canon P&S, Their is a menu item under the Camera Icon Tab > Set Shortcut Button > Select the Custom White Balance Icon.

When you have done this, when in camera mode, when you press the printer button (thats the left upper one above the wheel on my S90) Custom White balance is read and Set.

There are a lot of functions that can be set with this. On another P&S I can even set it to record video from that button.
