Hi,
I recently purchased a DC1200 Elite, which comes with the external flash and an optical fiber to sync the camera flash with the external flash. I'm planning a trip to the Galapagos, and I'd like to just travel with the camera (no flash) because of the severe weight restrictions on flights fromQuito, and because I figure I really want pics of the big pelegics, so don't need the external flash.
My question is - can I remove the flash "ring" that holds the optical fiber on the front of the camera? The instructions tell you how to install the ring, and indicate that there are some sort of pins that engage. I don't want to break the unit, so please help!
Thanks!

Good pictures need to be lit from below too. I'd find a way to take the flash. You will miss it when you are there.

Sorry I didn't answer the original question. The DC500 I own has a ring that just slips around the base of the lense.

At the bottom of the ring, there is a tab, just put your finger under the tab and pull away from the camera. Don't be afraid, the cameras really durable and won't break.

As Joe said, Yes it is removeable However For me I find it easier t twist it the opposite direction that you twist it on. I tried pulling but was too scared of breaking the little tab. SO I just twist/push the tab back and comes off.

If you just muscle it off, you will break the retaining clips. As you are looking at the camera lens, rotate the flash ring a 1/4 turn clockwise, releasing the retaining clips, allowing you to effortlessly lift it off.
