Not sure if this is all cell phones, but if you are using AT&T cell phone to call a cell phone in Cozumel you have to add a 1 after the 52 (i.e. 011-521-987-xxx-xxxx) If it is to a land line you do not need the 1.

Most 869-exchange numbers are landlines, so from the USA, it would be 011 (international) +52 (country code) +987 (area code AKA "lada" in MX) + 869-xxxx (7-digit number).

To direct dial long distance, Cancun (area code 998) to Coz (area code 987), dial 01+987+7 digit number.

Your US cell phone will probably roam on a Mexican network as a Mexican phone -- most do -- phone may show "GSM", "Moviestar" or "Telcel". In that case, dial only the local 7-digit number when calling within Cozumel. To call a cell within Coz, you must dial the area code as well (987).

To dial from MX to the USA when roaming as a Mexican phone or from a landline: 001+US area code+7 digits.

Adding the 1 before the area code applies whenever calling a cell number from outside of Mexico. Most of the time, Cozumelenos will give you their cell numbers prefaced by 044, which is our cellular area code. The 044 is only used within MX and its use is confusing so we're not going there. But it's important to know that any number that starts with 044 is a cell.

Cell phone usage, from Mexico to the U.S., can be costly. You might want to take a look into a service like Skype (Free Skype calls and cheap calls to phones - Skype).

It is important to note that you need to add that "1" digit when calling a Mexican cell phone from outside of Mexico (physically).

For example, to call a friend's cell in Cozumel from my USA cell phone when in the USA, I program my directory to say "+52 1 987 xxx-xxxx", but that doesn't work from my USA cell phone when in Cozumel. I need to remove the "1" when in Mexico.

Basically, to call international from a USA land-line, prefix the country-code with 011. To call international from a USA cell-phone, prefix the country-code with "+". The country code for Mexico is 52. After the 52, add a "1" if dialing a Mexican cell phone from outside Mexico. Next comes the Mexican area code 987, and the phone number xxx-xxxx.

Or go to the store in mega and buy a cheap prepaid MX cell with a few minutes on it. A few minutes on a us cell will pay for one.

Thanks for the idea of going to Mega. I think that is what I will do when on the island. I may need to call my op from either US airport or from Cancun, so will use the hints given here.
