I support my LDS and they keep me up to date on what is going on as far as upcoming classes and dives. Do they do this for everyone? Maybe, but at the same time they can make on-the-spot recommendations between two pieces of equipment so that it may fit my needs better. And before you ask, no, they do not recommend the more expensive piece just so they can have more $ in their pocket at the end of the day.

On the flip side, my LDS does know that I check items and their prices online too.
 
What keeps that LDS from offering free air cards, credits towards training, or free or discounted service in order to provide value equal to or better than the online dealer offers? An LDS has the means to be more competitive if that is what it want to do. It does not have to cry to the customer that it just can't offer competitive deals because of manufacturer restriction. It will not work if the custom's spending limits will not allow him to take advantages of the LDS value but I just don't see many shops even trying. They would rather get full MSRP (or more) from the shrinking number of customers they can fool with their sad story.

I always try to buy things on-line, but I'm finding that going through the LDS is better for me most of the time. If I have a problem, I can take it back to the LDS instead of having to ship it back... Only issue there is finding what I want at the LDS. I did have an LDS Owner try and tell me that a product was new when in fact it was used (he'd told me so on a seperate visit). So I am hesitant with him now, but still go because it's the best one I've been to in my area thus far.

Bottom Line: Support your LDS when you can even for a slight increase in price, but don't be a fool either.

I buy a lot of stuff online but also buy a lot at dive shops too.

Remember online stores can't fill your tanks. They go out of business your screwed.
 
There were many topics on this exact topic and all of them have 20+ pages of people debating pro vs con for either dive supplier.

What I can tell you from my personal experience is that I am almost tired of going to my LDS because that place is filled with hostility. Unlike my local bike shop which I frequent quite a bit... the LDS is exact opposite of what it should be.

Here is my average visit summed up in a nutshell.

I have to fight traffic to get to the LDS. When I finally get there I am welcomed with the most annoying cowbell attached to the door so having been there many times my hand immediately stretches up to shut that thing fast. As I glance around cluttered up little room filled with dive gear I also notice that half of the shop has boyscout stuff which is quite irrelevant. But that aside I see a big sign on top of the counter staring right at me and it reads in big bold black letters: "Impeach Obama". I try not to roll my eyes as do many clients that come there and I start walking around trying not to bump into anything that might cause just about everything in the shop to fall like a stack of dominoes. As I walk around and glance at the side counter I see who else... a picture of Bush Jr smiling back at me. As if that was not enough there are various articles posted around the shop that deal with political issues and they are pretty hard not to notice. And then of course there is issue of gear. Everything in the shop has a 25% markup... and I mean everything. I dont know about you but there is really no reason for me to keep returning there aside for dive trips. I can get my air tank rentals at dive sites. All my gear can get serviced pretty much at any dive shop. I have all of the gear that I need. On a personal level my LDS owner is always grumpy, has to make snarky and quite often racy comments about everything and everyone. Forget about bringing some one else's gear into his shop. He gets super pissed. In the end he maybe is so grumpy because his entire income depends on gear he sells or services he provides and online business certainly takes away his bread and butter. But on the other hand... in today's day and age he needs to diversify and offer services that would make people want to return to his shop.

If you like your LDS and they like you then support them. It will cost you a little more money but it might be worth the extra cost. If the people are nice and become friends and you get buddies through classes and training at the shop, that's worth something. They have to charge 100% retail on stuff to make it work. There's a lot of overhead at a brick and mortar shop.
The good ones will make the price of gear seem trivial when you look at the whole picture.

Online dealers are actually hurting themselves.
Drastic markdowns and free shipping means they have to go full blast all the time just to keep their heads above water. How many online dealers are there now? dozens. Can the sport really support all of them?
Scuba isn't that popular of a sport like other sports with huge sales volumes.

I don't really have that hot of an LDS selection where I live. The one close to my house is alright I suppose. A few old farts working in there with grumpy attitudes. I know them and they are OK with me. They put up with my weird vintage fetish and my old tanks. I think they get a kick out of me 'specially when it's slow.
I don't buy much except for air cards. Even that will change since I will be getting air at a shop up on the coast. Sometimes I feel like they are thinking "either buy something or get out". Maybe it's my imagination.
They are pissed about the economy and online dealers.
They are pissed that they are trapped in MAP/MARP hell and can't compete.
The top manufacturers have their huevos in a vice.
They have a lot to be pissed and frustrated about.
I can see where they are coming from.
I would never want to own an LDS.

Ok LOL It seems like I should just go back and copy my other post from previous debates but Ill give it a new lease on life here :).

With my area there are 2 great dive shops and a handful of free lance dive instruction agencies out there. With this in mind they are to a small degree offset from one another by the fact they sale mostly entirely diffrent lines then each other (Some exceptions to this may apply). I have been good about finding great things that I need at either one shop or the other.

Now with the internet I have to agree with previous post that we all want Walmart prices but expect to get CEO income off of our services. An example of this may be Brand A has a pair of fins I want. It retails at an example of 250 dollars per pair (Its only an example guys) I arm myself with this knowledge and go to the LDS and see that low and behold its 250 dollars and they wont budge on it because the manufacture has price fixed the sale in advance.

I then go online to anysite. com and find that same pair in a grey market for 125.00. Thats 50 percent cheaper and means I can actually buy my fins and put gas in the tank too for the same price as just the fins at an LDS. Many LDS will complain about grey market and warranty. The fact is that while things can sometimes go awry with fins how often is this going to be an issue? Also when you factor in that these suppliers will have their own inhouse warranty which is sometimes equal to the manufactures warranty except that you have to send it back to them.

Now on the upside of an LDS I am currently enrolled in a dive master class at my LDS. Though as any one can imagine he like any other shop has his followers and he has his anti him crowd. Often times he can not compete with Online purchases but he does do little extras for his students. He allows me almost unlimited use of the pool (Except certain events and all classes as we can imagine) and he has sit down with me when I had problems I could not solve on my own.

In the end an LDS can survive but the problem with LDS is they first have to recognize they cant sale merchandise at a cost that pays for a 300,000 dollar home, 12 week long vacations a year to an island location they own a condo on. They have to understand as bad as they want to make money the consumer wants to save that money.

Hospitality makes all the diffrence in the world. Run a clean shop that does not look like a typical mans garage (No pun intended some guys have awesome garages). I want to walk in and smell things that just naturally go with a dive shop. (Neoprene) I dont want to smell a musty old attic smell. though huge inventories may not be practical for a small shop at least attempt to have a small amount of merchandise on display and also a small amount in stock for sale.

I want to come to a shop and not see some old grumpy bearded guy that looks like hes from the back woods running the store and presenting himself as we are a burden on him having to leave his office. I instead would rather see a person who if he does have facial hair keeps it neatly trimmed or maintained. I would rather see someone wearing respectible clothes not tshirts with vulgarity or encourageing illegal activities on them. When I ask about classes or gear I would like to speak to someone who is knowledgeable about your concerns. If they dont know they answer then be able to get someone who is able to help with my concerns.

I would also say honesty is a big plus. In this day and age a customer is demanding and wants his gear serviced yesterday but the reality is it can not be done that way most of the time. I want a shop to tell me something like "We can try to have it ready by Friday" Not "It will be ready by 5 pm friday" It sets a bad mood when you come in Friday and its not ready.

A LDS can also use Internet sales to their advantage too. Just because a customer bought something off line does not mean they wont need it serviced. Just be up front and honest and no matter how painful dont bash them for buying online but instead quote them a reasonable price for service and go from there. You may be surprised how that one pleasant experience may make a customer want to come to you more often.

LDS should also remember while alot of online sites offer training it just is not feasable for people like me to fly to Florida for the sole pupose of getting certified. An LDS can do it localy and should remember that people come to them to learn. In most cases there was not a salesman sitting outside the shop with a big mouse trap that snapped peoples feet and drug them into the pool. People who want to learn to dive are usually Excited about their prospects. This is a plus for a dive shop because right off the bat people are pumped up and excited. Instructors and dive master inevitably will have a bad day but should remember to always smile to the customer like life is the greatest its ever been. This in itself adds to the dive world because students see a happy instructor it means that hes having the time of his life while diving or he would not be there happy!

Online May be able to beat the LDS all day long price wise. But it doesnt mean a LDS cant win out with just good customer service skills!

talk about saving money and buy good equipment is a circus for you, Then I can say that you are a clown
