Now, let us talk a little about resurrecting threads where the last posts were nearly 2 and a half years ago; typically we make fun of newbs who do that nearly as much as we make fun of non-newbs who do that.

Why do folks make fun of newbs/non-newbs for digging up an old post but then turn around and give another the 5th degree for asking a question that has been asked in the past. You really need to make up your mind...

Well said. I don't see a problem if the person has something new to contribute or is in need of clarification.

I was curious a while back what standards are required for a PADI facility to be called "5-star" or "golden-whatever it is." (I've heard that a shop offering competing courses from other dive agencies won't qualify, but haven't been able to confirm).

I couldn't find them (the standards), but I did come across this interesting piece written by an employee at a shop in Thailand:

Regardless of the points made in that quoted piece, I found the repeated cheap shots the writer took at PADI, such as "Put Another Dollar In," "Pseudo Association of Divided Interests," etc, to be counter-productive. The writer came off like he's 14 years old.

If you want to persuade your reader to your point of view, it's best to refrain from calling someone, or in this case something, silly names.

Using the search function to do your own research is something I believe more members should do. Then after reading some of the old threads/posts one can post educated questions or comments in current threads, or start their own thread.

As long as one follows the TOS (talented typists even have to follow "the spirit" of the TOS) someone else telling one to make up their mind is just wasting key strokes. :mooner:

I was not even done making fun in this thread...
Safety aside, there does seem to be a an inordinate amount of inexperienced PADI divers who have taken crash courses and are now thrashing and bobbing around on the reefs these days. Tighten your standards PADI- for everyone's sake, as well as our delicate reefs. Perhaps go to a graduating certificate system which limits locations and depth for people taking these weekend courses? Once they have logged a certain number of dives, then they can move on to full certification.

Did Bogtrotter verify that "an inordinate amount" of those he sees "now thrashing and bobbing around on the reefs these days" are inexperienced crash course PADI divers?

IMHO, the last post in this ancient thread is a violation of TOS, as "agency bashing" is not allowed in the Terms Of Service for this board.

IMHO, Bogtrotter has also violated TOS, with his second post on SB, yet I am the bad one. :shakehead:

Aw, you're not that bad.

I was surprised to see a two-year old thread dug up.

Your post made me smile.

Smiling is good, right?

And you were both polite and welcoming.

I suppose the OP could have started yet another "PADI sucks" thread but bringing back this thread is probably more efficient. I wonder what search term he used. :dontknow:

And what are you the judge of what would be considered an educated question or comment. :rofl3: Maybe we should all run our comments and questions by you first to see if they are safe for posting.:D

A ScubaBoard Staff Message...

I'm surprised to see folks debating the merits of the search function and the relative value of resurrecting old posts on this thread, when evidently far more appropriate sections of the board already cater for that.

Keep it on topic please.

If you wish to discuss other matters, please take it elsewhere. You are perfectly entitled to open a thread on the appropriate forum to discuss these things and it only takes a click of a button.

Yikes- I came across this article in a general Google search when I was trying to compare PADI to some of the other associations such as ACUC and NAUI. I was trained through NAUI ten years ago and am not a very experienced diver myself, however I recently got back into diving and my recent re-training and experience with PADI thus far has left me scratching my head as to the merits of these crash courses. Surely diving is a risk sport relative to golf and fishing- even just diving to 20 m has risk otherwise why bother with certification. I didn't intend this to be NAUI vs PADI battle etc. Again my post was a commentary on this article and the merits of PADI crash courses in particular, or by any organization for that matter.

Apologies. I found this article through a google search. I'll search the board more thoroughly before I post next time.

I was in a combination class of PADI and SDI students, me being the only SDI student in the group. Don't have a clue what or when NAUI is but in my case we all took the same course, from the same instructor, except that I didn't have to waste my time on the charts since I was using a computer. Other than that, the course was the same.

Yeh I think the O/W courses are about the same for Padi/ Naui/ SDI/ ACUC etc, with a good instructor being the main component to good training. It was the crash courses I was commenting on.

NAUI is a not for profit association- their standard is used by the US Navy I believe.
