I went diving 4 times with mine this weekend and LOVED it's simplicity. My dive partners all thought it was "slick" because the could glance over at it and tell how much air I had without having to ask sometimes. Overall, much enjoyed. My only real issue with it seems to be that I can't set it to automatically do a safety stop even if there was no mandatory one. Might be user error though. Anyone know? Also, it would be nice if I could get it to tell me what the average bottom depth I was at was without me having to scroll through the entire descent/dive to find out. Again, maybe that's actually there/ an oversight on my part...

Overall though, great dive computer!

Thanks for the comments. There is no user error on your part- the safety stops are determined by the algorithm. If your dive is shallower than 40' you will not see a safety stop. At this point we don't have an option to do a safety stop on every dive regardless of depth- though if it is something people want, it could potentially be added with a future software update. Ditto for an average depth function- currently max depth is displayed, but not average depth.

We have had a few requests to be able to add additional time to the current two or three minute safety stop, for divers who want to be extra conservative.

There is always a conflict between adding features and making the interface more complex with many options and settings, but we will keep tabulating features that are requested for possible inclusion in future updates.

Very glad you liked the computer.

Hi,

I am in the market for a dive computer and I am very interested in this (also looking at Uemis and Mares Icon) but was wondering when (or if) a wrist version was coming. In trying console v. wrist for me there was no comparision that wrist was much easier to use during ascents/stops as well as when I have a camera in hand. Wrist mount is an absolute prerequisite for my eventual permanent dive computer.

It would have to be re-configured for horizontal display though to be streamlined on the arm. I would even do without air integration if necessary.

The product looks absolutely great, and its simplicity is a great virtue and not just for beginning divers. One glance gives time/depth/gas info all in different locations and different colors. Just what I was looking for.

Wrist version, please . . . .?

Guy

That was the most asked question at the DEMA show. While consoles are numerically the most popular, and if well mounted can be quite easy to use, there are plenty of divers who REALLY want a wrist mount. Coming out with a wrist configuration is obviously the top priority for us after getting the console out, it's always been part of the plan. It's just not possible to give a date yet, but we are working on it.

Sigh.

I was hoping that coming out with a Mac-friendly Cobalt computer application would be the top priority, with some sort of padded cover bag--like the kind that was included with my Suunto Cobra--being a close second. :D

If you're looking for padded console covers, I've taken delivery of some nice 'generic' ones @ Leisure Pro under their house "Blue Reef" brand @ $ 10 each. They fit just fine and I think you'll like them for your Cobalt. I'm using them for my own 2 Cobalts. :)

Having just learned about this computer, checking it out at the website, and comparing the ease of use from other computers I have owned (uwatec, Sherwood, Suunto) I am going to buy a Cobalt and sell my Suunto. I hate having to refer to the users guide for a constant refresher course on how to use it. The Cobalt is so user friendly and as been stated before you can use this right out of the box and you can! I am looking forward to playing with the thing all winter.

There has been mention of pre programmed safety stops when the stop is not required. It is impossible to program for every ones out of the box need. So my suggestion to this is if you want to do a safety stop that is not required, then just make one on your own. Or make the non required safety stop option in set up. I have not used a computer that made mandatory safety stops when not required to do so and I sure don't want to climb back on the boat with my computer sounding an alarm and the dive master getting all wound up about it.

If Atomic is still selling this without a nice pouch then shame on you! This is not a cheapo bottom of the line computer. Make a statement and design a nice storage pouch to protect our investment!!

The average bottom time to me is important to know. Only logging max depth is old school when we used navy dive tables. Yes it is nice to know max depth but to me the average depth is as important as max.

If a wrist model will be in the future I strongly urge Atomic to test the model underwater with camera strobes going off. I have posted before about the problem with my uwatek Galileo and spacing out for extended periods of time after a camera flash. Due to that I will not purchase a wrist computer again. I don't think that it is acceptable in any way for your computer to drop your tank pressure at any time.

I am glad to see RonR on the site to read our opions and suggestions.

A question, for you and for others: re. average depth/ max depth, if you only could display one (during a dive, I mean), which would you rather have? I'm assuming you want to see this during a dive, and not just in the log. Average depth is being computed, but is not displayed with the current software. One of the advantage of this sort of platform is that we can act on inputs like yours to more closely taylor future updates to the software to the needs of users.

The several comments re. the bag/ pouch are being passed along. Thanks.

There have been so many 'tables vs. computers' debate threads on the forum, I take it some people dive with tables. At least at the basic OW level, people use max. depth for table calculations, yes? So, would the max. depth not be more useful for 'important' decision making in more people than the average depth?

I don't know; just throwing out an idea here.

Richard.
